Hello,
I just purchased a brand-new HP Envy 17-da0003nj / B40GDEA laptop and turned it on for the first time today.

Approximately 20 seconds after powering it on, I received the following error message:

> "The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly. System Fan (90B)"

The message warns that continued use could damage the computer.
Please note: this happened on first startup, before any software was installed or any setup was completed.

I've attached a photo of the error screen.

How should I proceed? Is this considered a DOA (Dead on Arrival) unit?
Should I return it to the retailer or contact HP for repair/replacement?

Thank you in advance,

Hi @Justme78,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Envy 17-da0003nj (B40GDEA) laptop displayed a System Fan (90B) error on the first startup, The System Fan (90B) error indicates that the internal cooling fan is not functioning properly. This is a hardware-level issue, not related to Windows or software, and can lead to overheating and permanent damage if ignored

⚠️ Important: The steps you try These steps are safe and non-invasive — they won’t void your warranty. If the error persists after these steps, it confirms a hardware fault and replacement, or repair is necessary.

1. Perform a Hard Reset (Power Drain)

Sometimes static buildup during shipping can cause a false fan detection error.

Steps:

  1. Shut down the laptop.
  2. Unplug the power adapter.
  3. Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger and turn the laptop back on.

If the fan spins and boots normally, it was likely a one-time issue.
If the error returns, continue to step 2.

2.  Attempt BIOS Recovery (Optional)

If the fan error persists:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press and hold the Windows + B keys.
  3. While holding them, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  4. Release the power button but keep holding Windows + B for 10 more seconds.
  5. If successful, the BIOS recovery screen will appear.

3. Clean Fan Intake Vents (Visually Only)

Shipping debris or foam sometimes blocks airflow.

  1. Ensure the laptop is off and unplugged.
  2. Look at the bottom and rear cooling vents.
  3. Gently check for plastic film, dust, or foam inserts that may be blocking airflow.
  4. Do not open the laptop chassis — just check externally.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
