I recently had an issue where the laptop was stuck on a screen asking to enter the admin password for the bios (Windows 10 Home edition). After a bit of googling I figured out how to get the 8 digit number to input. This worked, but then I was prompted to input my Windows device encryption key. I got this off MS, and was able to get into the PC, and have backed up my data.
However, on reboot it would continually ask for the encryption key. More googling and the solution (for home edition) was to disable drive encryption then re-enable. So I disabled it, but no longer get the option to re-enable. Nothing to lose, I’ve done a full system reinstall, but still the same issue. In system info it qives the following message:
Device encryption support: Reasons for failed automatic device encryption: TPM is not usable, PCR7 binding is not supported, Un-Allowed DMA-capable bus/device(s) detected, TPM is not usable.
If I go into the bios, I can see TPM is enabled and active. There’s some options for resetting TPS and it warns about losing any data. I’m all backed up, so don’t mind losing data, but not sure if this is what I should be doing to fix the issue. This TPM issue also means I can’t upgrade to Windows 11 should I choose to at some point.
How do I get TPM working properly again?
