Been researching SSD health. Run across much on TRIM. Wondering whether it is needed or possible on my machine.

Could not find a FAQ which addresses this. Found out that Samsung Magician won't work on an OEM product  😉

Hi, @Wes046_91

You can trim the SSD anytime you want using the defragment and optimize drives utility in Windows, found under the administrative tools program list.

Here is a screenshot of my PC which has a NVMe SSD and the Windows trim function...I have it set to automatically trim the drive.

Having used SSD's since the early days, I sort of paid attention to TRIM on W7 but after W10, didn't pay much attention. I was under the impression the OS had a lot to do with TRIM. That being said, I had several old 120GB mostly OCZ before Toshiba aquired them go out on me, but further research into it  I believe having more overhead in drive size is the most important thing. With smaller drives, memory gets written over a lot, leading to earlier drive failures.

But I'm no expert. The drives that failed on me were 6-7 years old and ran distributing computing projects where there was more than normal writes going 24/7.

Thanks for your experience.

Duck Duck Search reveals almost nothing about HP computers and Over Provisioning or Trim,

Community Search: Ditto

Would appear that the only way to do this with a laptop is to replace the OEM Samsung with a commercial one upon which Magician will work. Running SSDReady to monitor. Comes back with a 4+ year life prediction. Im an old dog learning new tricks with SSD's and all information is helpful.

Thanks:

It was in front of me where I couldn't find it;-)

I've used HP products [41c 71b etc] for 40 years and i suspected this issue was dealt with somewhere...

Mine is setup to do this weekly. [Envy laptop] [ I didn't know]

No wonder there has been so little comment about it.

You're very welcome.

Yes, I believe that Windows 8 and newer operating systems support the TRIM function via the defragment and optimize drives utility.

For Windows 7, you need to run a command as an administrator to enable TRIM and I uncheck the defragment drives function in W7.

This article indicates you have to do it for W8 as well, but I don't have any PC's with W8 installed to confirm.
