Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb3000 (A8RT9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

The USB-C port is broken—or rather, my HP Victus 15 FB3770NG can only be charged via USB-C using a 65W adapter when the laptop is completely turned off. It used to work just fine. Sometimes screen mirroring worked with an adapter, but data transfer never really did. Just today, data transfer worked, but screen mirroring didn't work again.

Hi @JER10000

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. Based on the details shared for your HP Victus 15-fb3000 series notebook, the USB-C port appears to be providing inconsistent functionality across charging, display output, and data transfer.

Since the port worked more reliably before, let's focus on a few recommended checks to help identify whether this is a software, firmware, or hardware-related condition.

Verify the USB-C port capabilities

  • Confirm that the USB-C adapter, display adapter, and cable support both DisplayPort Alt Mode and data transfer.
  • Test the same accessories on another device, if available.

Update BIOS and HP drivers

  • Open HP Support Assistant and install all available BIOS, chipset, graphics, and USB-related updates.
  • Restart the system after completing the updates.

Perform a power reset

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Disconnect all external devices and the charger.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the HP power adapter and test the USB-C port again.

Check USB-C functionality in HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Press the Power button and immediately tap Esc repeatedly.
  • Select F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the System Tests and Component Tests available for USB-related hardware.

Reinstall USB controllers

  • In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Uninstall all USB Root Hub, USB Host Controller, and USB4/USB-C related entries.
  • Restart Windows and allow the drivers to reinstall automatically.

Test each function separately

  • Test USB-C charging while Windows is running.
  • Test a USB-C flash drive for data transfer.
  • Test an external monitor directly through a known-good USB-C to DisplayPort/HDMI adapter.
  • Note which functions consistently work and which do not.

Check for physical port condition

  • Inspect the USB-C port for dust, debris, bent contacts, or looseness.
  • Ensure the connector fits firmly without movement.

If charging works only when the notebook is powered off, while display and data functions operate intermittently, the next key indicators are the HP Hardware Diagnostics results and whether the BIOS/chipset updates change the behavior.

Please let us know:

  • Current BIOS version
  • Whether the 65W USB-C charger is an HP charger
  • Results of the HP Hardware Diagnostics USB/System tests
  • Whether the USB-C port fails with all accessories or only specific adapters/cables

This information will help us narrow down the cause more precisely.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
