Hi

After some years of happy use, a few weeks ago my HP laptop suddenly shut down with a "thermal shutdown" warning. I haven't really been able to use it since, it can barely make it to the Windows login screen before closing down.

It's not a Windows issue - the same thing happens if I go in to BIOS settings on bootup and leave the laptop there. The fan does blow quite hot air out, so something is amiss, I don't think it's just a dodgy sensor. I managed to get Speccy installed and this reported a CPU temperature of something like 140 degrees before the laptop shut down!

I took the laptop to a local repair shop; they cleaned it out, checked the heatsink and replaced the thermal paste and the fan, but it hasn't made any difference. I've tried placing it on a USB laptop cooler, and also spotted there was a later version of the BIOS available, I managed to upgrade to this after a few attempts - no difference.

Has anybody come across an issue like this before - can a CPU itself suddenly burn hot?

Thanks

@Makeshifty

I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is overheating and shutting down as soon as you power it on.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I see that you have performed all the relevant steps and it looks like a hardware issue.

I recommend you contact support and check the available service options for your computer.

Here is how you can get in touch with support.

1)Click on this link – www.hp.com/contacthp/

2)Select the product type.

4)Select the country from the drop-down.

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me, but my laptop warranty expired in 2016 and based on the serial # the support website says I can't extend it. I don't  think manufacturer repair is still a realistic option?

Thanks
