Thunderbolt Dock G2, USB-c Dock G5
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Dear Community,

I consider buying a docking station for my MBP 16.

Both, the USB-c Dock G5 and Thunderbolt Dock G2 seem fine to me.

However, I have some questions, that I cannot get out of the data sheet:

-Does the USB-c dock come with a power supply?

-Can the USB-c dock target a DIsplay at 4K@60Hz and do data transfer via USB 3 at the same time?

-Will both devices charge my MBP at about 100W?

Thank you very much in advance!

Best regards,

Markus

Hi,

I would not go the usb-c dock road with Apple device.  For Mac you are better of with the thunderbolt option.

Apple does not officially support DisplayLink driver which is required for usb-c dock to work on Mac.  While it will work most of the time in case driver break during the cycle (which happen for 10.12 and 10.13) you will lose functionality, and do not expect help from Apple since it required a third party driver.

Also usb-c dock on Mac will use more of your CPU compared to thunderbolt so less power for your actual work. And for graphic insensitive thunderbolt is better.
