Good day.
I've bought used HP Elitebook 830 G5 (i5-8350u, 16 gb DDR4, 256 GB SSD) which has Thunderbolt 3 port (USB Type C)
I have dock: Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Essential Dock (40AV0135EU) with 135W output. Notebook is connected to the dock via Thunderbolt 3 or 4 Type C <-> Type C cable.
Dock is 100% working. I used it with two monitors with:
- MacBook Pro 14'' (M1 Pro)
- MacBook Pro 16'' 2019 (Core i7-9750h)
- HP EliteBook 845
I also have Huion Kamvas 13 tablet aka interactive external display that can be connected via Type C Alternate Mode
In short, i got two problems:
- When i connect my notebook to the dock it detects dock with monitors that are connected to this dock and start to charge from it. But when i reconnect dock it doesn't charge my notebook even though monitors are still detected. But it charges fine from 100W charger via Type C or from stock HP charger.
- When i connect Huion Kamvas 13 via Type C cable notebook doesn't power it. Same Huion Kamvas 13 with same cable works fine with Macbook Pro
More details
First problem
I think, i narrowed it down to BIOS/Hardware issues.
What i tried/more details. It really got me confused:
- Notebook is flashed with lastest BIOS (1.23)
- Dock is flashed with latest firmware as well
- Boot Linux (Ubuntu and Mint). Same behavior. Notebook charges from dock on first connect. Doesn't charge on second but still detects monitors
- Currently i'm on Windows 11. If i boot up notebook and open Device Manager i can see that ACPI UCM-UCSI device works fine. When i connect dock for the first time ACPI UCM-UCSI device is still fine. But when i reconnect dock for the second time it doesn't charge notebook and ACPI UCM-UCSI device shows error 43. I saw many people got this error but none of possible solutions have helped
- Flashed every accessible BIOS version and tested dock with each one - same behavior
- Disconnect everything from notebook and hold power button for 30 seconds - same behavior. Charges from dock on first connect
- Disconnect battery from notebook's motherboard and hold power button for 30 seconds - well, without battery it will be always the first time so dock always brings power to notebook
- Use Type C <-> Type C Thunberbolt 3 and Thunberdolt 4 cables - same behavior. Sometimes notebook charges on 4 or 5 attempt with Thunderbolt 3 cable. But same cables always work with HP Elitebook 845 and MacBook Pros
- Use Type C <-> Type C USB4 cable with dock - notebook only charges (every time i connect it) and doesn't detect monitors
- Use Baseus 100W charger via Type C <-> Type C cable - notebook charges every time i connect it
- Connect my phone with Type C <-> Type C cable - phone gets charge from notebook, can send and recieve data (Android, ADB works)
Overall, no consistency in behavior. Notebook detects monitors and USB devices connected to the dock, but charges only on first connection. It doesn't receive charge when i reconnect it to the dock.
Notebook charges from both Type C and native HP chargers and it can charge phones from its Type C port.
But i don't know how to narrow my problem further. Either it's BIOS, either some hardware issues. But maybe it is easy fix, if i bring notebook to service, like dead capacitor or something like that. But again, no consistency in behavior, so i'm not sure about hardware. The only consistent thing is that when i boot up notebook and connect it to the dock for first time it will 100% get charge. But if i reconnect notebook it won't get any charge.
Second problem
In addition to the first problem.
I have Huion Kamvas 13 tablet or interactive display. There are two ways to connect it to notebook:
- HDMI+USB -> Type C converter
- Type C <-> Type C using Alternate Mode as DIsplayPort
If i use Type C <-> Type C cable to connect Huion tablet to MacBook pro it will get power from notebook and output image.
If i use same Type C <-> Type C cable to connect Huion tablet to my HP Elitebook 830 G5 it won't get any power and output image
Also
I've searched this community topics for both problems and tried everything i could find but none of possible solutions has helped. If there's a chance that both problems refer to BIOS issues how can i debug my issues?
I also installed HP diagnostics into UEFI and tried every possible related test and got PASSED.

Sorry I have to say your Machine won't work with Lenovo dock - Please don't ask my why because they are NOT compatible. Have you tried HP USB-C G5 dock ?
Regards.

My guess still is that problem is deeper, because:
- Notebook always outputs image to monitors that are connected to Lenovo dock. But doesn't charge from the dock on second connect. It does charge on first connect, though
- I get ACPI UCM-UCSI device error 43 on second connect if i check device manager
- HP Elitebook 845 works with the dock
- I can't power Huion tablet from 830 G5 using type C<-> type C cable. But if i use type C -> type A converter and connect tablet with type A -> type C cable it will get power
In addition, external display (Huion Kamvas 13) doesn't being powered from type C port (using type C <-> type C cable) of 830 G5 but works fine with Macbook pro and HP Elitebook 845 and even smartphone. Which means that probably something is wrong with type C port of 830 G5. But anyhow i can charge my phone from notebook's type C port.
One more detail i forgot to mention/found out:
- Huion input is 5V-2A. but actually works fine with less current. I took USB type C -> USB type A converter and USB type A current tester and connected Huion tablet to my 830 G5 - tablet turned on and it's consumption was 1.3-1.5A. If i connect it directly with type C <-> type C cable it doesn't work. if i connect Huion tablet to Macbook Pro it takes same 1.3-1.5A and works fine. So it's not power problem of 830 G5 type C

So i tried the type C <-> type C cable that came along with Huion tablet (one that is for image output) and it always charging laptop from Lenovo dock AND it works with all peripheral that is connected to the dock. Bundle Lenovo thunderbolt 3 cable doesn't work stable with my HP but it did with another HP Elitebook and both Macbooks. So i don't think it's HP's issue. Almost.
Now it more looks like some sort of proprietal embedding made by HP to make it work only with HP docks. But still i need somehow to debug type C connection because i still can't connect my Huion tablet
