Dear,

I own a HP Pavilion Laptop 15t-eg300, 78539AV. I need it to connect to thunderbolt 3 or thunderbolt 4 devices. It is not working when I plug it in with a cord that works with other computers. I assume that the port is not compatible with TB3/4, is there any way to fix this?

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi @DrDanielH

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for the detailed info, Daniel. Based on the specifications of the HP Pavilion 15t-eg300, your laptop includes a USB Type-C port that supports:

  • USB Power Delivery
  • DisplayPort 1.4
  • HP Sleep and Charge

However, it does not support Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4, which explains why your Thunderbolt devices aren’t working when connected via a compatible cable.

Why Thunderbolt Isn’t Working

Thunderbolt ports require specific hardware-level support, including a Thunderbolt controller. While the USB-C port on your Pavilion 15t-eg300 supports video output and charging, it lacks the Thunderbolt protocol stack.

Can You Fix or Add Thunderbolt Support?

Unfortunately, Thunderbolt cannot be added via software or adapters to a laptop that doesn’t have native support.

What You Can Do Instead

If you need high-speed data transfer or external display support:

  • Use the USB-C DisplayPort 1.4 feature for monitors.
  • Use USB 3.2 Gen 2 peripherals for fast data (up to 10Gbps).
  • Consider a USB-C docking station that supports DisplayPort and charging.

If Thunderbolt is essential (e.g., for daisy-chaining displays, ultra-fast SSDs, or GPU enclosures), you may need a laptop with native Thunderbolt 3/4 support.
