Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

To confirm this here: The swelling 98% charged battery is not working in our HP Envy 13-ah0000 now and will new battery
fix this problem?

* We bought our HP Envy 13-ah0xxx in 2019; This computer has been working correctly daily without any problem
till in Sept/2024; Then, we found out this issue: the battery is fully charged but the computer stopped working
without plugging to AC power; The computer became hot easily from 2011, so we have been cleaning the dust of this computer with a blower and cooling this computer with cooling pad each day;

*Several days ago, we tested all parts including this battery of this computer inside HP Support app on this computer;
All parts are in good condition based on this testing report;

* Several days ago, we opened the back cover to take a look inside this computer; We cleaned the dust inside;
Then this battery became swelling;

* Before buying one new battery, we need to find out what exactly is causing the fully-charged battery
not powering this computer; If this cause is not found, then the new battery may not work in the above computer;
If this swollen battery is dead, why is it charged 98%? Why the above testing report says the battery is in OK condition?

* After long searches on the web, the following website is recommended to us; we found the following battery
below that matches the HP Part number; We wish to see some comments and review here ASAP about this battery before
we buy this expensive battery.

Thank for any thoughts and suggestion in advance!!

Hi @NolymitAI,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like the swelling battery in your HP Envy 13 is a significant concern, especially if it's no longer powering the laptop despite showing a 98% charge. Here's what could be happening and how a new battery might help.

  • Battery Swelling: Swelling is typically a sign of a failing lithium-ion battery. While it may show a 98% charge, the battery’s internal components could be damaged, leading to inaccurate charge readings and reduced capacity to power the laptop. Swollen batteries are hazardous and should be replaced as soon as possible. This is likely why your laptop isn’t working on battery power alone despite it being "fully charged."
  • Inaccurate Test Results: The HP Support app may show the battery as OK because it is based on voltage readings and other basic metrics. A battery can hold charge but still fail due to physical damage, such as swelling, which isn’t always detected by standard diagnostic tools. The battery is likely malfunctioning internally, even if it shows a high charge.
  • Why is the battery charging to 98%?: Swelling doesn’t always affect the ability of the battery to charge, but it does impact the battery's ability to discharge power correctly. The swelling indicates that the battery cells are deteriorating, and though it may charge, it won't properly supply power.
  • Should a new battery fix the issue?: Yes, a new battery should resolve the power issue. Swollen batteries are no longer reliable and often can't hold a proper charge. If the rest of the laptop’s components are in good condition, as per the HP Support test, replacing the battery should bring your laptop back to normal.
  • Further Cause Investigation: Since you've maintained the laptop by cleaning the dust and using cooling pads, overheating likely contributed to the battery's degradation over time. However, this is common for laptops over several years. Replacing the battery should fix the issue unless there’s an underlying hardware problem (which seems unlikely if the tests showed everything else is in good condition).

Recommendations before purchasing a new battery:

  • Make sure to purchase the battery from a reliable source that matches the exact part number for your HP Envy 13.
  • Ensure the battery has a warranty.
  • Given the symptoms, it's critical to stop using the swollen battery immediately to avoid further damage or potential safety hazards.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
