HP 250 15.6 inch G9 Notebook PC (511V8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

The left click button below the trackpad on my laptop has suddenly become very loose and wobbly.  It does still click, but slides about all over the place.

It's a HP 250 G9.  The laptop is only 2-3 years old but out of warranty so will have to try and fix it myself.

I can find the entire top cover available for the G9, including the buttons, trackpad and keyboard.  However, I can find just the two buttons available for the G7, which is all I need.  My question is, can the G7 buttons be fitted to a G9, or are they different?

My laptop is grey, and the G9 top covers only seem to be available in black or silver.  And the G7 buttons only seem to be available in silver.  So There's no chance of getting anything the same colour at the moment.  Is there any way I can repair the button itself to save replacing any parts at all?  Can anyone show me how they attach underneath before I go in with a pry tool and break anything else?

Thanks!

Appreciate you connecting with the HP Community.

It appears that the click buttons on the HP 250 G9 are designed a bit differently from those on the earlier G7 model, so they may not be directly interchangeable. While the G7 buttons might look similar, the internal fittings and mounting points are likely different, which could cause alignment or functionality issues if swapped.

If the button is still operational, you may wish to check whether it can be gently reseated or stabilized before considering a replacement. However, if a replacement is necessary, the most reliable option would be to replace the full top cover assembly for your G9 to ensure a proper fit and long-term stability.

I’d recommend getting in touch with your nearest HP Authorized Service Center so they can examine the button mechanism in detail and advise on the best repair option. They’ll be able to confirm whether the part can be repaired or if a full top cover replacement is required.
