After a factory reset using HP Recovery Manager, touchpad buttons stopped working - left button doesn't select, right button doesn't open context menus, etc. Instead, clicking on either button freezes the laptop for a few seconds.
Touchpad gestures seem to be working fine - including a 'tap' in lieu of the left click and a 'double finger tap' in lieu of the right click (though this doesn't offer full mouse funtionality: for instance I can't select an area nor drag objects on the screen).
I already run a hardware component test (F2 after reboot), and both buttons passed all tests with flying colours. I have also uninstalled Synaptic Touchpad driver in Control Panel, and reinstalled it via HP Support Assistant.
I have also rest the touchpad to default in Synaptic ClickPad Setting.
I have an Intel 600p series SSD installed in my laptop, so I have to stay on Windows 10 ver. 1703 for the moment.

UPDATE
The issue just got worse. The mouse curson often vanishes from the screen. And, when the cursor is visible, touching the ClickPad and moving the cursor freezes the laptop for a few seconds - which often results in random and/or unintended 'clicks' in other areas of the screen.
All these issues render the entire ClickPad pretty much unusable... 😞

UPDATE #2: ClickPad is fully operational again. I can hardly take the credit, though.
I thought checking SSD for bad sectors was a good idea. After two failed attempts at chkdsk /f /r... the process got stuck at 11% on both ocassions... HP BIOS (?) took the laptop to 'Autorecovery' mode (?) and eventually suggested restaring Windows - which I did.
Upon retarting Windows, the ClickPad regained full functionality - both buttons are working as they should, and so do the gestures.
