Hi @ClarkeyL
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for sharing that—when a trackpad button suddenly stops responding, it can really throw off your workflow. Let’s walk through a few recommended steps to get that click working again:
🛠 Step 1: Check Touchpad Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Make sure the touchpad is enabled, and check if Tap with a single finger to single-click is turned on (this can help as a temporary workaround too).
🔄 Step 2: Perform a Hard Reset
This clears out any temporary glitches:
- Shut down your laptop completely.
- Unplug the power adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power on.
📥 Step 3: Update Touchpad Drivers
- Right-click the Start button > Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click your touchpad > Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
If that doesn’t help, visit HP’s official driver page and enter your laptop model to download the latest touchpad driver manually.
🧪 Step 4: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
- Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Select Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad, then follow the on-screen instructions.
This will help confirm whether the issue is hardware-related.
🔄 Step 5: Windows Update
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.
- Sometimes a system update can resolve compatibility issues with input devices.
If the button still won’t respond after these steps, it might be a physical hardware issue. But let’s not jump to conclusions—try these first and let me know how it goes. We’ll keep pushing forward until it’s sorted!
