Example: Pavilion x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I am using HP Pavilion x360 Convertible with the latest Windows 10 update v2004 (OS build 19041.329).

My touchpad has stopped working and HP's website has not yet made the Synaptics touchpad driver for v2004 available for download. Only up to v1909 is available. Any idea when will the new touchpad driver be released for download?

Thank you.

Regards

HP drivers certified for Win 10 v2004 don't exist yet. And, HP drivers for previous Win 10 versions won't install on a Win 10 v2004 system.

My HP Spectre x360 Convertible laptop was extremely unstable after I allowed Windows Update to download and install Win 10 v2004. My mouse cursor acted as if my system was infected with a very malicious virus.

My workaround was to disable the drivers for the touch pad, touch screen and pen. I'm using an HP Spectre wireless mouse.

Also, the Intel High Definition Audio device can't find a compatible driver.  HP Support indicated that it could be a couple of months before they release certified drivers for their HP products running Win 10 v2004.

At this point in time, your options are to wait for HP Support to post Win 10 v2004 drivers at their leisure while you suffer the the inconvenience  of a partially functional system, or downgrade to Win 10 v1909 and wait for the v2004 drivers to appear before again upgrading to Win 10 v2004.

I have an HP Spectre x360 late 2018 model.  I was in the same boat as you, but I found a workaround for now.  While we wait for HP to get their act together to release certified compatible drivers for Windows 10 update v2004 (Build 19041.329), I was able to force the v1909 (and even v1903) drivers to install on the Windows v2004.  Most of my devices / system issues as a result of upgrading to v2004 are now gone (with the exception of the HD Camera, which is not working with Windows Hello facial recognition.  Other than that, it works).

Disclaimer:  This is what worked for me.  It may not work for your setup, and I take no responsibility for any adverse effects.

I would also highly recommend that you create a restore point using System Restore so that you can undo any changes made to you system if things don't work out the way you expect.

Now that's out of the way, the 'hack' is very simple:

(1)  Download the driver and manually extract the contents of the file, using 7-zip or Winzip,  into a separate folder (HP's archived executable driver files typically use a naming convention such as "spxxxxx.exe")

(2)  Navigate to the folder containing the extracted files and locate the file "install.cmd"  Open this file up using Notepad.

(3)  About halfway down the file, there is a bit of script that checks for the version of Windows you have installed, rejects the installation if it does not match with the expected version of the driver.  The section begins something like:

         REM ================== Check if OS is RS5 (10.0.18362) ==================
ECHO [%date%][%time%][%~dpnx0] Check if OS version has met requirement >> %Logpath%
          IF /I [%os_ver%] EQU [10.0.18362] echo [%date%][%time%][%~dpnx0] OS version match. >> %Logpath% & goto Install_DRV

(4) Now, on the line beginning with "IF..", simply replace "[10.0.18362]" with "[10.0.19041]", and save the file.

(5) Save the file and exit.

(6)  From the same folder, locate the ".msi" installation file, usually called "setup.msi" and execute that.  If that doesn't work or the file is not there, there should be another executable file that may work called "HPSetup.exe".  In my experience, most of the time the .msi file is the correct file to begin the setup process, and the HPSetup.exe file usually doesn't do anything.  There is also an .msi file called "DummyInstaller.msi", which I did not find to be the correct file to begin the installation process.

(7)  That should be it.  The installation should proceed successfully.

NOTE:  The build version for Windows update v2004 is 10.0.19041, so all the above does is trick the driver into thinking it's installing on a previous update (e.g update v1903) of Windows 10.

This is my holdover hack until the proper Win v2004 drivers are out.  I hope this helps you.

Aiden

You can download and install from Microsoft Windows Update: Click on "View Optional Updates: and install mouse driver.

Aiden, I am greatly appreciated for your suggestion - worked as a charm ( even, I have a newer Windows 10 2004 version (  10.0.19042 )  and, seems to me, the install file is really looking for the proper number matching your current Windows release.

Thank you very much.  This worked perfectly for my Spectre X360 13 (2020 model).  I don't know why Windows update installed v. 2004 on my laptop but once it did my mouse took on mind of its own, I had not sound driver, etc.  By changing the text of the install .cmd files for each v. 2004 driver (which were posted on HP's download site for other laptop models) I was able to install new bluetooth, audio, pen, and WLAN drivers and everything is smooth sailing now.  I would have thought HP and Microsoft would have done something to stop the automatic upgrade to v. 2004 for HP products for which no v. 2004 drivers have been released.

Hi Aiden. my build is 19041 and the install file also has the 19041 mentioned. Not sure what is wrong but having the same issue with my x360 now.

Sudbose, what do you mean exactly when you say you are "having the same issue".  Can you describe the exact error message you are getting, and what steps you took to get the error message?  Also, what driver are you attempting to install? if you can point to the specific file name and I see if I can replicate your issue or/at least see if I can come up with a solution.

If you have some time, one thing I would recommend is to ensure that you have the latest updates via Windows update.  Also,  you should run the Windows System File Check utility and the DISM image repair tool.

Open and elevated Command Prompt (as Administrator) and type the following without the quotes:

"SFC /Scannow"

After that has completed (if may find errors, or it may not), I usually like to run it a second time.

Next, run the DISM tool by typing the following without the quotes:

"Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"

When all the above is complete, reboot your computer, check Windows Update again, and try to reinstall the latest drivers again.  Remember to check the "Install.cmd" file as I discussed in my previous post regarding the "hack". Make the appropriate change according to your Windows Build.  You mentioned that you are having the same, issue so I am assuming that the build number in that "install.cmd" file does not match your actual Windows build, you need to edit the file.

Let me know if you still need help!

Good luck!

Aiden.
