HP Spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Hi,

I have the HP Spectre x360 - 13t-ae000 CTO which I bought refurbished off Newegg near the beginning of the year. My touchpad was working fine until I updated my touchpad driver using device manager. When I'm using my touchpad to click or double click, sometimes the cursor would jump off to the left or right by a little bit. It's very frustrating. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall all the latest drivers. The current one is from 9/21/2018. The only way my touchpad would function normally is if I install the older port-convertible touchpad driver.

I've followed the steps from this website: merabheja.com/fix-synaptics-smbus-driver/
I have not found a solution to my problem. I have done diagnostic tests and nothing was wrong. Please tell me if there is another latest SMBUS driver I can download that will work.
Since it's refurbished, I do not have a warranty and cannot contact HP support directly.

@lovelesly Alternatively, you can replace the touchpad on your own rather than shipping it out, here's what you need to know:

You may order the replacement parts on the HP Parts Store, use the HP Parts Surfer to find the part number and If you've already looked for it and couldn't find it on the HP Parts Store, you may want to get it locally at the online store such as Amazon or eBay, etc...as the part numbers are universal.

For your reference:

TouchPad (does not include TouchPad cable) - Use only the part you have, other color may or may not work:

  • In dark ash silver ƭnish 942837-001
  • In natural silver ƭnish L02694-001
  • In pale rose gold ƭnish L07273-001

TouchPad cable (includes double-sided adhesive) 942838-001

You could also use the HP Service and maintenance guide to find the part number and the list of steps to remove and reinstall the new part: click here for details, on page. 46 Chapter 5 Removal and replacement procedures.

@lovelesly Welcome to HP Community!

I have a few steps that should help resolve your concern:

Check the Mouse options under control panel:

Start → Control Panel → Mouse → Buttons tab.

Check the box labeled "Use MS Office compatible scroll only."

Also, check the box below labeled "Scroll in active window only."

If the issue persists, attempt the below steps:

Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.

(If that works when the touchpad is disabled on Synaptic software, it would mean that it's a touchpad failure,

However, if the external mouse doesn't work either, it could be a software/driver issue).

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:

Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.

  • 1.   Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.
  • 2.   Click Device Manager.
  • 3.   Click + sign next to Mouse.
  • 4.   Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".
  • 5.   Restart your computer.

Let me know how that pans out,

Thank you for replying with those steps. Unfortunately uninstalling it did not fix the solution. I have talked to an HP rep and even had my laptop reset. It didn't fix it either. The hardware doesn't show anything wrong with my touchpad but the only solution I have is to send it in to HP but it would cost me hundreds of dollars because it is out of warranty.
