HP Laptop 14-dg0xxx Product ID 4XW50EA#ABU
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Water spilled on laptop. Dried out.

Laptop works perfectly fine with usb mouse except now the touchpad and buttons do not operate within Windows 10 OS.
If I boot into diagnostics the touchpad and both buttons work perfectly.
Back in Windows, dev manager shows error with I2C HID Device.
‘This device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed.’

i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers but to no avail.
I’ve disconnected and reconnected all ribon cables on touchpad. No obvious signs of corrosion.

Is it possible following the water spill something on the touchpad circuit board could be causing Windows not to see the device correctly?

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Hi KrazyToad 🙂 Thanks for your reply.

I have already done what you have suggested and so my laptop is totally up to date with all the latest drivers from both HP

Support Assistant (I have Version: 9.7.433.0 installed) and from Windows Updates.

I have performed update checks again just now but there are no new updates to install.

Unfortunately I still have the same issue with touchpad not working.

Any other ideas please?

Try reinstalling the Touchpad Drive from Device Manager

- Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and select it from the list of results.

- Look for Mice and other pointing device and expand the List

- Look for Touchpad driver then right-click it, and select Update Driver.

- Select Search automatically for updated driver software.

- If these steps don't work, try reinstalling the driver: Open Device Manager, right-click the Touchpad driver and select Uninstall. Restart your PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

Hi. I have reset the pc and still get the same error.
even when I boot from a USB with Windows 10 to install from scratch, the touchpad does not work within the install menus appear. I connect a sub mouse and all works fine.
Even though in diagnostics the touchpad works perfectly there must be a fault somewhere preventing the touchpad being recognised when in windows OS and even when booting from usb to install win10 from scratch.
