HP Pavilion - 15-cs0051wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just bought a refurbished HP Pavillion model 15-cs0051wm. It had Windows 11, although it was supposed to have Windows 10, so rather than my returning it to the eBay authorized refurbished computer department, they just sent me a link to do a clean install of Windows 10 and a $30 partial refund (from the $300 + price plus $30 shipping).
The OS is irrelevant. Before I wiped windows 11 and installed Win 10, which it was supposed to have in it, and advertised to have, I noticed the touchpad scrolls the oposite way every other computer I have does, so normally I'd just go to the controll panel to the touchpad controls and there is either a synaptics settings screen, (in my older HP laptops), or or an Elan touchpad settings screen in the control panel (now referred to as "settings"), that allows me to choose the direction that the touchpad scrolls. (See top part of photo).

But this newer HP laptop doesn't have anything like that. In settings under Touchpad/mouse instead of saying "Elan Input Device" it says "Elan Click Pad", and the touchpad setting window doesn't have any of the touchpad options that my 2020 model has for scrolling. In fact it has virtually no controls at all except for "touchpad sensitivity".

So is this some BS they replaced the touchpad controls with, or did the eBay certified refurbishers, just put the wrong drivers or something in, or put in a crappier touchpad that doesn't really have the functions that it's supposed to have?

I've tried every "fix" I can find on Youtube and the Microsoft (COMPLETELY useless website), and dozens of other sites, and nothing makes it work right. In fact when I tried just removing the driver and installing the same driver that my 2020 HP laptop has on WIndows 10, the touchpad just completely stopped working. (thank god it has a touch screen that still worked, so I could at least restart it, and then it reinstalled the crappy mouse driver with the Elan "click" pad driver.
So I can still return this for about 20 more days, which I'm ready to do if there's no fix for this. It's just going to cost me another week of time when I don't have a week to waste.
Any help from someone knowledgeable about this issue (because it seems pretty common from what I've been reading, but I haven't found anyone's solutions to work.
I've tried reinstalling everything, deleting and replacing the driver, using a "patch that someone made that they said would work, but nothing has worked so far? Is this just a bad model, or is it supposed to have a touchpad controller that actually has real settings other than just "touch sensitivity".

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Hugh_Lett,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating touchpad issue. Given that you've tried multiple fixes without success, let's go through some additional troubleshooting steps to see if we can resolve the problem.

Update Drivers

Go to Device Manager:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."

Find the Touchpad Driver:

  • Look under "Mice and other pointing devices" for your touchpad. It might be listed as "ELAN Input Device," "Synaptics Touchpad," or something similar.

Update Driver:

  • Right-click on it and select "Update driver." Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software."

Check HP Website:

  • Visit HP's official support website and look for the latest touchpad drivers for your specific model. Download and install them.

Adjust Touchpad Settings via Control Panel

Open Control Panel:

  • Search for "Control Panel" in the Windows search bar and open it.

Find Touchpad Settings:

  • Go to "Hardware and Sound" > "Mouse" or "Touchpad."
  • If you see an option for "Synaptics" or "ELAN" settings, check there for scrolling options.

Check Windows Settings

Open Settings:

  • Go to "Settings" > "Devices" > "Touchpad."

Scroll Options:

  • Look for a section related to scroll direction. Some touchpads offer this setting under "Advanced gestures" or similar.

Reinstall Touchpad Driver

Uninstall Driver:

  • In Device Manager, right-click on the touchpad driver and select "Uninstall device." Check the box to delete the driver software if prompted.

Reboot and Reinstall:

  • Restart your laptop. Windows should attempt to reinstall the default driver automatically. If it doesn’t, download the driver from HP website.

Check for BIOS/UEFI Updates

Visit HP’s Support Website:

  • Check if there’s a BIOS/UEFI update for your model. Sometimes, touchpad issues are related to BIOS/UEFI settings.

Update BIOS/UEFI:

  • Follow HP’s instructions to update if there is a new version available.

Factory Reset

Backup Data:

  • Before proceeding with a factory reset, ensure you’ve backed up all your important data.

Reset Windows:

  • Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Recovery" and select "Reset this PC" to start fresh.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
