Please follow the instructions below to uninstall the touchpad drivers. Once done, restart the computer and the Windows will automatically install the drivers.

1. Press Windows+X to open the menu, and choose Device Manager on it.

2. In the device manager, expand category "Mice and other pointing devices".

3. Under this category, right click on your Synaptics Touchpad driver and click on Uninstall.

4. You may be required to confirm the uninstallation. Check the box next to "Delete the driver software for this device" and click OK button.

5. Restart your PC for the change to take effect. After restarting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

6. Do not perform any manual upgrades to the driver until it does automatically

Let me know the outcome!

Cheers 🙂

I have attempted to uninstall the Touchpad driver and checked the box next to "Delete the software". The touchpad remained active.

I restarted my PC and the Touchpad was still active and a further restart was required to "Finish reinstalling the Touchpad software"!!

I have run windows update - nothing availabe

I have run Windows Update Troubleshooter - no problems found

I have checked for updates for HP Support Assistant -  nothing available.

I am no further forward and the touchpad is still active

Here are a few other things you can try:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Soundsection and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELANor Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If that doesn't work or isn't available, a registry edit should be the solution for us, I'd personally suggest a registry backup by clicking on file and export before performing the below steps, to be on a safer side:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMousekey in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

After making those changes your touchpad will now be disabled every time you connect a mouse to your laptop. As you can see, even though this option isn’t available, you can still enable it by following these steps. We have to mention that this solution applies only if you’re using ELAN touchpad.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

When I open Control Panel I do not see Hardware and Sound. I do have Device Manager or Mouse. In Device Manager I see Mice and other pointing devices.

Whichever way I go I do not see Mouse settings or Device settings or  "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached"

I have already explored this at gregat length following Jeet_singh's advice.

I recommend you to download and install the Touchpad driver from the below link and follow the steps suggested in the first post of Jeet_singh.

Downloading and installing the Touchpad driver had no effect.

However I found a Windows article "How to turn on or off Touchpad Gestures in Windows 10. In there I saw a screen image of  "Symantec Control Panel". So I pressed the Windows key + S and there I found Synaptics Touchpad. In the right hand panel I clicked Open then I was able check the box (as suggested by Jeet_singh in his first post) "Disable internal pointing device when external pointing device is attached" and click Apply on a screen "Synaptics  Pointing Device".

And it works!! My Touchpad is disabled and if I remove my USB mouse it is active.

So I have solved the problem for myself.

However my thanks you and Jeet_singh for your help
