@beechguide

I reviewed your post and I understand that you want to disable the touchpad when you connect an external mouse.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

What is the product number of your computer?

Meanwhile, I recommend you follow the below steps to disable the touchpad.

Open up Windows Settings by clicking the “Start” button, then clicking on the cogwheel. You can also hit Windows+I. Next, click the “Devices” option. On the Devices page, switch to the “Touchpad” category on the left and then disable the “Leave Touchpad on When Mouse is Connected” option.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Thanks The Fossette but the facility " Disable touchpad when a mouse is installed" is not available on my Pavilion 15! This frustrating as it has been on every other laptop I've had

Update the Windows follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. Select the Start (Windows) button from the bottom-left corner.
  2. Go to settings (gear icon).
  3. Select the Update and Security icon.
  4. Choose Windows Update tab in the sidebar (Circular arrows)
  5. Select Check for updates. If there is an available update, it will begin downloading automatically.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks The_Fossette but that didn't work either. The only box that appears when I click on "Touchpad"  in Settings is one about sensitivity; the page is otherwise blank.

An Elan clickpad is installed on my laptop and the only 'solution' I've found is in Knowledge Base but requires an installation of something before the installation of Windows 10. As the laptop came with Windows 10 installed, that solution is not possible.

On all my previous laptops I have been able to disable the touchpad as I do not like it: a mouse is much more convenient and precise. I find it quite unacceptable that I cannot disable the touchpad on this HP laptop.

Please try these steps to disable the Touchpad

  1. Press Windows Key + R and enter regedit. Press Enter or click OK.

  2. When Registry Editor opens, go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESynapticsSynTPEnh key in the left pane.
  3. In the right pane, right-click the empty space and choose New > DWORD (32-bit Value).

  4. Enter DisableIntPDFeature as the name of the new DWORD and double click it to open its properties.
  5. Select the Hexadecimal option and change the Value data to 33. Click OK.
  6. Close Registry Editor and restart your  Notebook

Thanks, Krazy Toad but I have an Elan clickpad not a Synaptics touchpad so I suspect your solution would not work.

HP Recommended
  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If issue still persists, try this:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse key in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

Thanks again Krazy Toad.  As I said before the 'box' referred to in your para 4 does not exist on my laptop and there is no mention of Elan.

What I have now done is to fix a piece of card with a layer of kitchen foil underneath the touchpad and it works a treat!!

I'm glad you found a work around 😊
