I just got a hp laptop 14. I set it up but cannot use the touchpad. It won’t let me use touchpad to click. I cannot open anything unless I can use the tab button or enter button. I have restarted it many times. The touchpad enable is on

Hi @M704,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your new HP Laptop 14 touchpad is not responding to clicks, and you can only navigate using the keyboard. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check the touchpad click area
Lightly tap the bottom-left or bottom-right corner of the touchpad.
Some models require a firm physical press rather than a light tap.

Turn on “Tap to click” in touchpad settings
Press Windows + I to open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
Make sure Tap with a single finger to single-click is enabled.

Toggle the touchpad off and back on
In Touchpad settings, turn the touchpad off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
This refreshes the touchpad driver behavior.

Check the touchpad function key
Look for a key with a touchpad icon (often F5, F7, or F11).
Hold Fn and press that key once to ensure the touchpad is not partially disabled.

Verify touchpad driver in Device Manager
Press Windows + X > Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices.
Confirm the touchpad is listed and not showing a warning symbol.

Reinstall the touchpad driver
In Device Manager, right-click the touchpad and choose Uninstall device, then restart.
Windows will automatically reinstall the correct driver after reboot.

Run Windows Update again
Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any optional driver updates.
Touchpad drivers are often delivered through Windows Update on new systems.

Test in BIOS
Restart the laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.
If the touchpad does not respond there, it may indicate a hardware issue.

I hope this helps.
