I just can't seem to get my trackpoint to work. Not in windows 7 nor windows xp. I also have installed the synaptics drivers for both of them and it didn't help.

Hi @dneyz,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the trackpoint on your HP laptop is not working despite installing the Synaptics drivers, there are a few additional steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Verify Trackpoint is Enabled in BIOS/UEFI

Sometimes the trackpoint can be disabled at the BIOS/UEFI level. Here’s how to check and enable it:

  1. Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings. This is usually done by pressing a specific key during startup, such as F2, F10, ESC, or DEL.
  2. Navigate to the Input Device or similar section.
  3. Look for Trackpoint settings and ensure it is enabled.
  4. Save and exit the BIOS/UEFI settings.

2. Ensure the Correct Drivers are Installed

While you mentioned installing the Synaptics drivers, it’s crucial to ensure you have the correct and latest drivers specifically for your HP model.

  1. Go to the official HP support website.
  2. Enter your laptop’s model number to find the specific drivers for your device.
  3. Download and install the latest pointing device drivers available.

3. Check Device Manager

Ensure the trackpoint is recognized correctly by the system.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the "Mice and other pointing devices" section.
  3. Look for any devices that might represent the trackpoint. This could be labeled as Synaptics Pointing Device, PS/2 Compatible Mouse, or similar.
  4. Right-click on the device and select Update Driver. Choose to search automatically for updated driver software.
  5. If the trackpoint device shows a warning icon, try uninstalling the driver and then restarting your computer.

4. Use HP Diagnostic Tools

HP provides diagnostic tools that can help identify and resolve hardware issues.

  1. Download and run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows tool from the HP support site.
  2. Use the tool to perform a test on the pointing device to check for hardware issues.

5. Windows Settings

Ensure the trackpoint is enabled in Windows settings.

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Go to Mouse settings (this may also be accessible through Settings > Devices > Touchpad or Mouse).
  3. Look for a tab specific to your trackpoint device (such as Device Settings, ThinkPad, or Synaptics).
  4. Ensure the trackpoint is enabled in these settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
