When upgrading RAM, for example 2 off 8 Gbyte modules changing to 2 off 16 Gbyte modules, is it possible to instead remove both ram modules and simply fit a single 32 gigabyte module?

Yes, possibly but other than keeping options open to eventually install 64 gigs, nothing to be gained by doing so. You can check the computer's max memory capacity with this command line inquiry:

Once the Command Prompt window is open, type the command “wmic memphysical get maxcapacity” and press Enter. This command will query your computer's memory subsystem and display the maximum capacity of RAM in kilobytes.

If its 64 then you can install a single 32 gig module...and even if the max is 32 a single module of that capacity might work.
