Had an issue with the BIOS on my 8760W and a dead 8770W to drop a main-board into, so instead of getting another 8760W main-board, I looked around and read the success stories of others who did it, and what they said was needed, so I decided to try upgrading it to an 8770W. The only thing I read from others, was that in order to do so, the USB3 board would have to be changed also, that was it. So I picked up a couple of 8770W main-boards, two 3840QM CPUs and the 8770W USB3 daughter-board. The replacement of the 8770W main-board went perfectly, and it is now up and running with a faster CPU too. The 8760W on the other hand, not so well. The board replacement went fine. The daughter-board and everything went well, till I went to install the touch-pad ribbon cable. Well, it seems the cable for the pad has 4 contacts on the 8760W, whereas the 8770W has 5. So, I have to find an 8770W touch-pad. No biggie, I can order it. Moving along, I get it all back together (except the touch-pad) and boot it up.... No video. so I swap screens with the 8770W, they work fine on the 8770W, but not even a screen flicker on the 8760W. Also, I see that the flex cable in the 8770W is different than the 8760W. So, I have another 8770w cable on order. Still, I figure I should be able to get video output from an external port. I have tried the DisplayPort, but get nothing from it. Is the VGA the only port that can be used from boot? I want to see the bios. Any ideas, or thoughts on this Frankinstein Monster of a build?

Well, I did get it working last night. The 8760W had an AMD HD6770 graphics board in it. I assumed it would be compatible, but just for the hell of it, I thought I would swap boards. I had a couple Nvidia Quadro boards so I dropped a Q3000m into the case and it still didn't work with either built in or through the Display Port. Opening and closing the lid several times to see if I could get the external video working, all of a sudden I got external video, then when I opened the lid again, I had video on the built in screen... This has now led me to believe the lid switch may be faulty. However, I can find nothing on a replacement HP 8760W lid switch. It is not even shown in the manual except for a dotted outline on the bezel, stating that this is the location it is found inside the lid. Does anyone know if there is a way to repair or if there is a replacement available?
