HP Envy LaptopT
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Trying to upgrade a friend's hp envy-x360-15m-cn0011dx  laptop from a 256GB SSD to a  1TB one.

Everything I found online seemed to show it using a SATA type 2.5 SSD drive, so I ordered one from WD and got the laptop case open.

And now I'm lost. The board located under the battery looks like nothing I've seen. It's not a 2.5" SATA, nor is it an M.2 nor NEMe.

It's just a  small 4.5" x 2.25" circuit board with a metal shield cover,  and only connected to the MB via 3/8" wide ribbon cable.

The separate 2.5" SATA bay is empty with no cables to hook up anything.

So what is it?

Because machine did not have dual storage option, you need few more parts to be able to install 2.5" HDD/SSD

  • The hard drive cable is available using spare part number L21894-001.  (1)
  • The hard drive rubber sleeve is available using spare part number L20103-001.  (2)

So does the new SATA cable plug into the same small connector where the other SSD board is plugged into?

Do I need to make BIOS changes to make it boot to the new drive?

And do you know what kind of SSD is in there now?  It doesn't look like anything I'm familiar with or found online.

Thanks for your help.

There should be a 128 gig M.2 SSD under the metal shield:

Based off this picture what are you seeing inside the laptop?

The SATA bay is completely empty with no cabling or mounting hardware.

Underneath the battery where the manual shows the SSD mount, it looks like this.

Not like any M.2 or NVMe SSD like I've seen.

The small ribbon cable is the only connection to the MB.

The SSD is not under the battery; that is the back of the touchpad. Can you take a wider shot showing the part of the laptop in the picture I posted?

OK, I think I see the problem.

I have the HP manual for this model that says to remove the battery to be able to remove the SSD. So I figured it was under the battery.

But in fact, the 256BG SSD is on the far right edge of the MB. And you don't have to remove the battery to get to it. I didn't recognize it since it's a lot smaller than normal M.2 boards I've seen.

But it does say M.2 on it.

In fact, there's really not enough space to put in a standard M.2 board because at 3.15 inches the new board would block the case screw directly below it.

If I can make it fit, can I use a standard M.2 board in its place?  Or would I be better getting a new cable for the 2.5 " SATA  SSD in the empty bay?

Any other ideas.

No no no no. That is not it either. You have to take off the metal shield on the left side of the motherboard directly above the hard drive. M.2 SSD and memory are under that "L" shaped shield.
