I have an old HP G70 laptop, which now has no power. I intend to retrieve data from this and have attempted to connect its hard drive to a USB port of my current laptop, a HP Pavilion 14-ce3xxx6530.
This laptop will not recognise the old hard drive.
I have two USB ports (D: and E:) and neither will register the old drive.
Two File Explorer windows pop up, one for each drive, whichever one I choose.
They say that the location is not available. "A device which does not exist was specified."
Can anyone shed any light on this?
The old drive is a Seagate 160GB Serial AT Disc Drive.

You may need a powered external hard disk enclosure.
It would help if you specified how you are connecting the disk, as in what type of cable or enclosure.
The old SATA hard disk may be drawing too much power in µAmps for the USB port.

Yes.
An enclosure that is externally powered is always better when connecting legacy hard disks.
The problem with the one you are using is that, depending on the hard disk's current draw, it can do ruin the traces on the notebook system board related to the USB port.
