I ran the HP PC hardware diagnostics windows / UEFI earlier this evening.  When I ran the UEFI fan speed and thermal test it goes quickly to 40% and then stays / freezes at 40%.  Does anyone know what is happening and / or how I can fix this?

Something weird is going on.  Earlier I let the UEFI fan speed and thermal test run for about 30 minutes while I did some other things.  After when I came back the test was still running and it was still at 40%.  I was unable to cancel the test using the ESC key, so I powered down the PC by using the power button.  When I restarted the PC I checked the test results.  One line for the  UEFI fan speed and thermal test it said "Cancelled", which it was.   But the next line under cancelled  says the UEFI fan speed and thermal test "PASSED."  Does anyone have any idea what is going on and if I need to do anything (have the PC checked by a PC repair shop, update drivers (if I can figure out where they are, etc,)

Hi @Hugger1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Update BIOS and Firmware:

  • Ensure that your laptop's BIOS is up-to-date as updates may include fixes for hardware compatibility issues.
  • Visit the HP Support page, enter your laptop model, and check for any available updates.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Ensure that the laptop vents are not obstructed and are clean. Dust accumulation can lead to overheating and affect fan performance.

Perform Hard Reset:

  • Turn off your computer.
  • Disconnect all external devices, including the AC adapter.
  • Remove the battery if it's removable.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect everything and power on the laptop.

Run Diagnostic Tests Again:

  • Attempt to rerun the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics by pressing Esc at startup and selecting f2 for diagnostics to check if the issue persists.

HP Support Assistant:

Consider External Cooling Solutions:

  • If overheating is a consistent issue, consider using a cooling pad to help dissipate heat more effectively.

I hope this helps.

I reran the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics again, with the same results.  I let the  HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI fan speed and thermal test run for over an hour and it still stayed at 40%.  I tried all your suggestions, except for the hard reset as I'm not comfortable removing the battery.   Removing the battery certainly has changed in the last few years.  It used to be 2 clips / locks that held the battery in place,  But now the battery is actually inside the notebook.

Do you have any other suggestions on how to get this fixed?

Thanks for the detailed follow-up — I hear you, and I completely understand how frustrating this must be.

It does sound like the UEFI fan speed and thermal test is either freezing or not reporting correctly. Since you’ve already tried most of the troubleshooting (great job on that!), and given that your battery isn’t easily removable, you can skip the hard reset for now.

Here are a couple more suggestions:

BIOS Recovery: Sometimes the diagnostics tools act up due to a corrupted BIOS. You can try restoring BIOS defaults or using HP’s BIOS recovery tool. Let me know your model, and I can guide you step-by-step.

Run HP Support Assistant (again): Sometimes it catches updates the UEFI tool doesn’t. Launch it, check for updates (especially for Thermal Framework or chipset drivers), and apply anything available.

Thermal Sensor Issue: If the test always hangs at 40%, there could be a glitch with the sensor itself. In this case, it might be best to have an HP technician run a deeper hardware-level test.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
