Upgrading HP 17 Laptop with AMD Athlon Gold 3150U -Model CP0XXX:
You're quite right -the HP 17 model with an AMD Athlon Gold 3150U isn't a performance beast, but to the best of my knowledge, let’s see what can realistically be upgraded:
1. RAM Upgrade – YES! -Up to 16 GB total:
Your system currently has 8 GB, which is decent, but upgrading to 16 GB (2x8 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM) can definitely improve performance — especially after a reset when background processes and Windows updates are still indexing.
Check slots: Many of these laptops have 2 SODIMM slots, but some come with 1 soldered + 1 upgradeable. Tools like Crucial's Advisor Tool can help identify your upgrade path without disassembly.
Upgrade tip: Use matched pairs (same size/speed/brand) for best performance in dual-channel mode.
2. CPU Upgrade – Unfortunately, NO:
The AMD Athlon 3150U is soldered to the motherboard (BGA package), so it’s not upgradeable. Most modern laptops -especially budget or entry models like yours, have non-removable CPUs to reduce cost and thickness.
3. Storage – YES! SSD = Major Speed Boost:
Factory configurations often include a 1 TB HDD (slow). Replacing this with or adding a 2.5" SATA SSD or NVMe M.2 SSD (if slot is available) will drastically improve boot and app load times.
If you only have a 2.5" bay: Upgrade to a SATA SSD such as a Samsung 870 EVO.
If there's also an M.2 slot: Install a fast NVMe SSD such as a WD Black SN770 and keep your HDD for storage.
4. Thermal Re-paste & Cooling Clean-Up (Optional):
If you’re comfortable inside laptops, cleaning the fan and reapplying a quality thermal paste such as Arctic MX-4, can help thermals and possibly performance consistency (less thermal throttling).
5. Final Thoughts & Tips:
Keep expectations realistic – this machine is good for web, media, and light productivity but not for gaming or heavy multitasking.
Windows or Linux? – If you're open to it, installing a light Linux distro (like Linux Mint XFCE) can breathe new life into older/slower hardware.
BIOS Update – Make sure your BIOS is up to date from the HP Drivers site for stability and RAM compatibility.
Let me know the exact model (e.g., CP0XXX = CP0035XX or similar), and I can help identify exact specs and upgrade paths -including what kind of SSDs and RAM your system supports.
Glad to have you onboard -HP systems can be fun to work on too once you get used to the layout!
Kind Regards,
