HP Envy 13-ad013nc
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have bought new USB flash drive - 3.0 and plugged it into USB port. After this, only this one device get recognized by the port. As I don't have any other USB 3.0 device, I can't test if it can read any 3.0 device. Before this, there was no problem and I did not updated drivers or did any software changes. I've tried some solution from support forums, such as deleting and reinstalling drivers for USB 3.0 root hub and other USB devices, Intel installation utility and driver as well as trying HP Hardware Diagnostics tool, which uses only test of writing to device, so I get FAILED result - 90FTOH-8SX94W-MFGGQK-8D3603 from Hardware Diagnostics when testing with USB 2.0, but PASSED when using with the mentioned 3.0 flash drive.

There are different pins used for the data signalling connection of a usb 2.0 and a usb 3.0 flash drive to a USB 3.1 port.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_3.0

That is why 3.0 may work and USB 2.0 not.

USB 2.0 uses pins 2 and 3 for data transfer.

USB 3.0 uses pins 5/6 and 8/9 for transmit and recieve respectively.

So yes. The port is probably dead for USB 2.0 use.

Power/charging uses pins 1 and 4 for usb 2.0 and 3.0

Kindly identify your notebook with its complete product name.

There is no HP Envy ad013nc notebook in HP's inventory.  You left out a few characters.  It should be HP Envy xx-ad013nc, where xx is the approximate size of the notebook's display in inches.

Help us help you by not making us guess what size it is.

Using the product number is an even better option.  Look on the bottom of the notebook in tiny letters for a ProdID. Post it here in your thread.

Thanks for the specific information on yor HP product.

What is the brand and model of the flash drive?

Did you try the USB 2.0 flash on both USB 3.1 ports? ( there is one on each side of the ultrabook)

Did this happen just after a recent operating system update to Windows 10 version 1803?

Start your notebook, immediately tap the Esc key and then the F2 key to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Please run the long system test and post the result here.

The flash drive is SanDisk Ultra Flair™ USB 3.0 flash drive 16GB -  info can be found here https://www.sandisk.com/home/usb-flash/ultra-flair

I've tried usb 2.0 flash on both sides, left side is operating normally, right side is the problematic side, also USB type C on the both sides - right and left are working properly.

System update was performed, but few days after problem was identified. No other update or change was made prior to problem. Problem started immediately after using the 3.0 flash drive.

The HP PC Hardware diagnostics was performed on problematic USB as mentioned in the description with result:

PASSED - when using mentioned SanDisk Ultra Flair™ USB 3.0 flash drive

FAILED - with code 90FTPH-8SX94W-MFGGQK-8D3603 when using any 2.0 device

Result of Quick system test in HP PC Hardware diagnostics was PASSED on all components:

  • Battery check
  • Processor check
  • System board check
  • Hard drive SMART check
  • Hard drive short DST check
  • Memory quick check

That is an interesting result and an unusual issue.

Your notebook may have a dead port. I say that based on your own statements.

Is your notebook still in warranty?

Yes it is still in warranty. Can it be a dead port if it work with the 3.0 USB? Also, it is providing power when I connect old external HDD  or when I connect smartphone.

Thank you for your time, advice and views offered. I thought it could be a dead port, but tried to consult if it couldn't be something different. It seems, that probably it isn't. I'll take it to service centre and get it fixed.
