I have a HP Spectre x360 from late 2021,Product 1Q874AV.  I also have the HP External UBC-C Monitor, E14 G4.

When using the display with the laptop in battery mode, plugged into either the USB-A or either of the USB-C ports, it works fine.  When I plug in the laptop to the AC Adapter, the display does not work on any port.

Why is this happening?

Hi @tallguyNJ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with your HP Spectre x360 14y-ea00 and the HP External USB-C Monitor (E14 G4) not working when the laptop is plugged into the AC adapter could be due to several factors. Here are some possible causes and solutions.

Power Delivery Conflict:

  • The USB-C ports on the HP Spectre x360 support Power Delivery (PD), which can sometimes cause conflicts when multiple power sources are connected. When the laptop is plugged into the AC adapter, it might prioritize power delivery to the laptop over the USB-C display.

Firmware or Driver Issues:

  • There might be a firmware or driver issue with the USB-C ports or the power management system that causes this behavior.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Certain BIOS or UEFI settings related to power management or USB configuration could be affecting the functionality of the USB-C ports when the laptop is plugged in.

AC Adapter Specifications:

  • The AC adapter might not be compatible with the specific power requirements of the laptop when using an external display via USB-C. This is less likely but still worth checking.

Update Drivers and Firmware:

  • Ensure that all drivers, especially the chipset and USB drivers, are up-to-date. Also, check if there is a firmware update for your laptop and the external monitor.
  • You can do this through the HP Support Assistant or by visiting the HP website and looking up your specific model.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to the power settings in Windows and ensure there are no settings that might be causing the USB-C port to behave differently when on AC power.
  • Navigate to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Look for any settings related to USB selective suspend and ensure it's either enabled or disabled as needed.

BIOS/UEFI Update and Settings:

  • Update the BIOS/UEFI to the latest version available for your laptop.
  • Enter the BIOS/UEFI setup during startup (usually by pressing F10 or ESC) and look for settings related to power management or USB configuration. Ensure that these settings are optimized for your use case.

Test with Different Cables and Ports:

  • Try using different USB-C cables to rule out any issues with the cable.
  • Test both USB-C ports and the USB-A port on the laptop to see if there is any difference in behavior.

By methodically going through these steps, you should be able to identify and potentially resolve the issue with your external display not working when the laptop is plugged into the AC adapter.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
