HP ZBook G5 x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I bought a USB-C docking station yesterday, and everything works except the USB-C charging of the laptop.

Whenever I plug the docking station in, I get 2 HP notifications saying that the docking station does not provide enough power and that HP recommends thier specific smart chargers. Clicking on one of them reveals that the detected power it says it can deliver is only 15W, however the docking station is rated at 60w (Which should be enough, since HP themselves have a 60W USB C charger they list as compatible)

This is the USB-C docking station I am using:
https://www.startech.com/nl/Kaarten-Peripherals/Laptop-docking-stations/usb-c-laptop-dock~MST30C2DPP...

I have tried disabling HP services and the notifications in startup, and disabling thunderbolt support in the BIOS but cannot get any other result.

The only thing I could find that this docking station uses the PD2 standard, and there is also a PD3 standard. I can't seem to find anything specifying PD2 wouldn't work with my laptop however.

Hello @FranseFrikandel,

A product number would be appreciated. E.g. 5MT98UA#ABL

Information on how to find a product number is detailed in this HP document. (Please do not post serial numbers on the HP Support Community. The difference between a product number and a serial number is that the product number contains a # sign)

Can you link me to where you found that 60W would work? I find it highly unlikely that a workstation would only require 60W. It usually requires upwards of 100W.

Regards,

Eddy

Hi @EddyK

The product number of my laptop is 2YS50AV.

As for the 60W, Following document contains recommended peripherals:
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwihvoO10rbk...

On page 41, following product is recommended: HP USB-C Universal dock, product code: 1MK33AA

On the first page of it's quickspec sheet (And on other places in the internet where I initially found it) it says it can deliver 60W of power to a laptop: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=2ahUKEwj1nb6507bkAhXOIVAKHawHCTM...

(See under: "Give your platform a power boost")

However what I found out later is that this dock is according to USB PD3 spec, and the dock I have is still according to USB PD2 specs. I am not aware about the differences between either of these specs and if there's any incompatibility between different specs and how I could know if my laptop will or will not support charging over USB PD2.
