Hi

barrel jack usb c PD to hp socket safe?
I'd like to charge my HP laptops with USB-C charger but the HP laptop only has the power socket.  I want to try charging using a plug converter with USB C socket or plug and the HP jack prong on other side. These are on amazon and alibaba and many on offer eg pfa. Are they safe to use or would they damage laptop? If so why if I find a USB C charger with correct power rat?

Even 1 volt difference can be harmful. Most likely damage is to the video. Overvolt or undervolt both are bad. I would not use any of those USB-C adapters. The damage will not happen immediately. You might use the laptop 6 months before problems appear.

You mean one of these?

I do not really understand how you get this over to the "other side". You just use a USB-C charger in lieu of the original HP barrel adapter as the power source. I fail to see any benefit.

Yes, that's exactly the barrel plug coverter I attempted to describe. By "other side" I refer to going from usb c female on one side of converter to the hp plug.  I only have HP charger with jack plug to charge laptop.  It would be helpful if I could use a usb c charger but I then need to convert the male usb c plug to the HP jack.  My concern is whether its safe to use such a barrel plug converter if I make sure wattage & voltage is right ?  I dont want to damage laptop.  Are there relibility issues with such devices? They're generally from China it seems and have good reviews I think.

Yes that adapter passes through the power from the brick. You need to match voltage. Under or over volting can damage the laptop motherboard. You also need to have sufficient power. What are the specs of your existing adapter? Volts watts, etc. should be on the label. Or just the HP part number.

Thanks for helping.  I'd like to use usb c replacement possibly soldering a 20V trigger to motherboard as I see lots doing it on youtube but I dont want to kill my pc and so am trying to assess risks.  Just bought this:

🚚Order update: ZY12PDN Type-C Surface Fast Charge Trigger PD 2.0 3.0 to DC USB Poller Detector

How much tolerance in rating is there before motherboard etc get damaged?  If I do 20V vs 19V, ie bit higher is that risky?  Is it less risky if I give lower volt than 19V its uses now?

What is current is higher/lower ie tolerance?

Currently I use 19V, 3.42A 65W for the HP power supply.

I'd like to use a GAN PD charger from Anker, I have a few of them.  They seem to have a lot of different outputs!

TBH, PD USB C seems ver cheap.  Why dont HP offer it on all their laptops???  I have laptop with many basic USB C only good for data.  Would seem an easy way to make customers happier inatead of sowing confusion and disappointment that PD isnt on new laptoo when uninitiated might assume it was.
