Microsoft Windows 11

For all who are experiencing issues getting USB power delivery to charge your laptop and cannot find an easy fix, I hope this helps.

I have confirmed an issue on my 840 G5 laptop in BIOS versions 1.27 and 1.28 in which the USB-C charging port will fail to provide power until hard reset. By which I mean resetting the embedded controller by holding the power button down for around 20 seconds with the cable unplugged. Once reset, USB-PD returns and will power and charge. Unfortunately for my case, it must be hard reset each and every time the power is disconnected. This has nothing to do with BIOS settings, and a rollback to BIOS 1.22 has eliminated the issue for me. I can connect and disconnect power at will now without issue.

Not sure why HP doesn't seem to provide download links for older versions but 1.22 BIOS is here: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp143001-143500/sp143245.exe

Note: you will probably have to disable Windows from downloading manufacturers' apps in Device Installation Settings if you're using Windows 11 or it will download the latest BIOS and update on reboot. You will also need to uninstall device ( and remove driver ) under the Firmware section of Device Manager - or else Windows will see its already got an updated BIOS downloaded and will auto install it upon reboot again.

If this has resolved your issue, please reply and maybe with enough attention HP might actually address this problem!
