HP ENVY - 13-ah0003na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

https://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/c06067279

I used the HDMI adapter which HP supplied with the laptop.

It's Part Number is 932777-001.

I connected it to my TV using HDMI cable. I used the Windows-P to select Extend/Duplicate but nothing happens. The TV is on the correct input.

Anyone have any ideas here? Is there some other setting I need to enable?

Yes. The adapter or the port itself could be faulty.

Have you used the HP Hardware Diagnostics to test the USB port?

There is a test in the component test section, but it requires the use of an external USB device.

You can purchase a USB type-C flash drive for that. I have a  couple of Kingston DTmicroDuo 3C  USB USB 2.0/Type-C flash drives.  They are cheap. I have seen them at Amazon for £10.00.

What you have tried is as you should if you have also tested the USB port operation with a USB flash drive or other USB device

That would seem to point to the possibility of the USB to HDMI cable being a faulty unit.

You can test that with another USB to HDMI cable.

Do you have a relative or a friend who wouldn't mind loaning you the use of one to verify yours has an issue?

The alternative and perhaps simpler solution would be to take your ultrabook to a friend or relative's home to test your HDMI cable's output.

I suggest contacting HP for warranty service to obtain a replacement gender change adapter.

Thanks!

I don't know many with a USB C adapter. Will contact HP warranty support and get a replacement.

Hopefully the port itself is not defective. It's a Type-C connecter so difficult as of now to get other devices to test.

I have a Type C > Ethernet adapter coming in the mail soon so that should give me a good indication.

Why not try the setup that you have with a connection to a different HDTV?

Have tried two different TVs and a few different HDMI cables.

Hoping it's the adapter is the issue! 😞

I have an old eBay generic and inexpensive $20.00 USB 3.1 type-C to HDMI adapter that I have used for years without issue on my HP product loan ultrabook and notebooks.

Have you tested the USB 3.1 type-C port with a USB flash drive to ensure that it is working?

It was my mistake to have not looked up the part number of the adapter.

I don't have a USB Type C flash drive to test it out unfortunately. In fact I have very few devices to test which is unfortunate.

The port is this one:

1 USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.2, HP Sleep and Charge)

Here is the adapter:

Thanks!

I found a friend with a ew USB C adapters and peripherals. Will be testing today to see what happens. The laptop is under a week old so hopefully it’s not the machine !

Sadly, the USB C port is officially defective.

The USB-C>HDMI adapter worked perfectly in my friend's laptop.

HIs own adapter wouldn't work on mine.

Called HP and they're picking up the laptop for repair on Monday. A shame to say the least, but at least I know now!

THanks for all the help.
