Hi!

I have the following relatively annoying issue. On my laptop, USB-C port only works if I start the machine by holding down the power button for 20 seconds. Then, the first USB-C cable I plug in (either a dock or a charger) works fine—until I unplug it. After that, if I plug it back in, the laptop doesn’t detect it at all unless I repeat the 20-second power button startup.

The normal charging cable working fine.

Thank you.

Hello @Dropi, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Having to hold the power button for 20 seconds to get the USB-C port to work can indeed be cumbersome. Here are some troubleshooting steps to address this:

  1. Update BIOS:

    • Check for any available BIOS updates for your HP ProBook 430 G6. BIOS updates can include fixes for hardware compatibility issues, including USB-C ports. Visit the HP Support page to download the latest BIOS version.
  2. Update USB Drivers:

    • Ensure that your USB drivers, including the drivers for the USB-C port, are up to date. You can do this through Windows Update or Device Manager.
    • In Device Manager, you can find USB controllers, right-click on each one, and select "Update driver" to ensure they are current.
  3. Windows Updates:

    • Make sure your Windows 11 is fully updated as system updates can resolve compatibility issues with hardware components.
  4. HP Support Assistant:

    • Use the HP Support Assistant, a tool provided by HP, to run system diagnostics and apply any necessary updates. This can be particularly useful for automatic driver updates.
  5. Reset Power Management:

    • Sometimes power management settings can affect USB functionality. Go to Device Manager, and under "Universal Serial Bus controllers," right-click each entry and select "Properties," then "Power Management" tab, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
  6. Check USB-C Port:

    • Inspect the USB-C port for any physical debris or damage. Debris can sometimes cause poor connections.
  7. Test with Different Devices:

    • Try connecting different devices to the USB-C port to ensure it’s not a specific device issue. Also, test the USB-C cable with another device if possible.
  8. Use HP's System Diagnostics Tool:

    • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly during start-up to launch the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool. Run tests related to USB functionality to identify any hardware issues.

Salman
