Hi everyone,
I've been looking forward towards having multiple displays connected to my laptop but after doing some research I've found out that the USB-C ports on the 2020 HP envy 15 laptop are not thunderbolt 3 compatible. I did find, however, that the port is labeled as Display port 1.4 on the product page. Does this mean that I will be able to purchase a compatible cable and use it to output video on my monitor whether it be usb c to display port, HDMI, vga, etc.

The port puts out a DP 1.4 signal so you could use a simple USB-C to DP cable and have DP output to a DP port on a monitor. You could use a DP hub and it would drive multiple monitors with DP input ports. To get any other type of display out of it you will need an "active" cable which has a chip capable of converting DP to HDMI, DVI, VGA, whatever. That is usually a Port replicator (docking station).

It is a CTO machine therefore we do not have its REAL specs. It should have following ports
- 2 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge);
- 1 HDMI 2.0b;
- 1 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 10Gbps signaling rate (HP Sleep and Charge);
- 1 headphone/microphone combo
No, not that simple you can use USB-C monitor to connect directly to USB-C port and you will get result as DisplayPort™ 1.4.
Regards.
