My laptop originally came with 2 chargers (barrel type and USB C). I used the barrel charger at home and used the USB-C charger at work or university. A couple of months back at university, I was using my USB-C charger, and when I came home and attempted to use the barrel charger, it would charge. And there I figured out that my USB-C port stopped working for charging and for data transfer. Nothing connected to it was detected. And an issue also arose with my barrel port. Now I can only charge my laptop via the barrel port if I hold the power button (from the shutdown state) until the laptop turns on and turns back off again. I can then connect my barrel charger, and then it will begin charging. What makes this issue worse is that if I unplug mid-charging or even at full charge and try to charge again right away or later, the charger is not recognised or just doesn't work. I need to hold the power button again for a power reset, meaning I only get 1 charging insert per power reset. If I unplug the barrel charger whilst using the laptop and simply shut down via the start menu and turn the laptop on again, the charger won't work. I HAVE to hold the power button for a full shutdownfor it to work. 

 

In summary, my usbc port stopped working entirely, the usb c charger is fine because it can still charge other devices. And my barrel charging port only works once per full shutdown by holding power button (regular shutdown wont allow charging to work). Since then i have ensured that my BIOS is upto date.These issues all happened very randomly one day and I would be extremely grateful if someone is able to offer a solution or explanation for the cause of these issues.

  • Since the USB-C port no longer supports charging or data, it’s likely the USB-C controller or power rail has failed.

2. Barrel Port Charging Limitation

  • The fact that the barrel charger only works after a forced power reset (holding the power button until shutdown) suggests the EC firmware isn’t properly initializing the charging circuit during a standard shutdown.
  • This behavior is consistent with power rail latching faults—where the system doesn’t release or re-engage the charging logic unless forced.

 

Steps You Can Try

1. Perform a Semi-Full EC Reset

This goes beyond a standard hard reset:

  • Disconnect all power sources (USB-C, barrel charger).
  • Hold the power button for 60 seconds.
  • Leave the laptop unplugged for 15 minutes.
  • Reconnect only the barrel charger and try powering on.

 

2. Disable Fast Startup in Windows

Fast Startup can interfere with EC initialization:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save and shut down fully before testing charging behavior.

 

3. Check USB-C Port in Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Look for any entries related to USB-C or Thunderbolt.
  • If present, right-click and choose Uninstall device, then restart.

 

4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Use HP’s built-in UEFI diagnostics:
    • Power off the laptop.
    • Press Esc repeatedly during startup → choose F2: System Diagnostics.
    • Run Component Tests > Power > Battery and Adapter.

5. Update Chipset and Power Drivers

Thank you very much for providing some steps in order to help with my issues. Unfortunately, my issue persists. The steps you suggested had the following effects.

  • Step 1 - This did not have any effect on my issue.
  • Step 2 - I have had fast start-up turned off for a long time now, so I didn't need to do this, but I did double-check just in case.
  • Step 3 - I checked Device Manager, and no USB-C or Thunderbolt appeared underneath Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Only the following appeared underneath universal serial bus controllers:
    • AMD USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)

    • AMD USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)

    • USB Composite Device (which i believe is my USB Wireless mouse receiver)

    • USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

    • USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

    • Even when I click 'Show hidden devices', USB-C does not appear, I only get a few more 'USB Composite Devices'.
  • Step 4 - I ran hardware diagnostics for the battery and AC adapter through the diagnostics tool app and through the startup BIOS, and on both occasions, my battery test passed, and my AC adapter test failed. This may not be of much use to you, but I will give my AC adapter test failure ID if it is of any benefit: M4R208-B5SCR4-GXGH5F-C1DQ03.
  • Step 5 - During the summer, after my issue kept persisting, I looked for any updates I needed, and I updated my BIOS, but it still didn't solve my problem. The link you provided to find drivers for my laptop came to an error page, but I tried looking for drivers for my computer through the same site you sent, and one of the first questions it asks is about the OS and the version of OS I am running. I have Windows 11 24H2; however, in the dropdown list they provided, the only options were the following: Windows 11, Windows 11 21H2 (64-bit), and Windows 11 22H2 (64-bit). I went with the first option and couldn't find anything related to the chipset or power management.

I hope this helps. Thank you again for a detailed guide. Unfortunately, my issue is still the same. Would there be anything else I could try to fix this issue?

Final steps to isolate and confirm the fault

1. Test with a Different Barrel Charger

Since the AC adapter test failed, the charger itself may be underdelivering voltage or triggering a fault in the power circuit.

  • If possible, borrow or test with a compatible HP 65W or 90W Smart AC Adapter.
  • Plug it in after a full power reset (hold power button until shutdown), and observe if charging behavior improves or becomes repeatable.

 

2. Inspect the Barrel Port Physically

  • Use a flashlight to check for bent pins, debris, or discoloration inside the barrel jack.
  • Gently wiggle the connector while plugged in—if charging flickers, the port may have a loose solder joint or internal break.

 

3. Reset Embedded Controller via Battery Drain

This method forces a deeper EC reset than a standard power hold:

  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts off.
  • Leave it off for at least 6 hours.
  • Reconnect the barrel charger and power on.

This can sometimes clear persistent EC latching faults.

 

4. Check for USB-C Controller Visibility in BIOS

  • Power on and press Esc > F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Navigate to Advanced > USB Configuration or similar.
  • Check if any USB-C or Thunderbolt controller is listed.
  • If not present, the controller may be electrically isolated or failed.

 

5. Reinstall AMD Chipset Drivers Manually

Even if Windows 11 24H2 isn’t listed, the chipset drivers for 22H2 are still compatible:

  • Visit the HP ENVY x360 15-eu0000 Drivers page.
  • Under Driver-Chipset, download and install the AMD Chipset Driver.
  • Also install any Power Management or System Event Utility listed.
  • Restart and test charging behavior again.

 

If the USB-C port remains completely unresponsive and the barrel port only works after a forced reset, the issue likely involves a hardware-level fault in the power delivery controller or EC firmware
