USB ports won't work, no matter what known-good device (mouse, thumb drive, keyboard, external hard drive) is plugged in.  Ports have power enough to run a laptop cooler lights and fan.  There is no activity when device is inserted, no sound.  Device manager shows the hubs and host controllers (intel) with no errors but there is an "unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed" error, even if no devices are plugged in.  I have tried uninstalling, disabling, and reinstalling drivers, to no avail.  SFC /scannow found some corrupt files and successfully repaired them.  I'm going to run DISM next.  I've heard of a port failing; but all three?   Perhaps it's a hardware error and not an operating system error?

I need some advice as to what to do to further diagnose and solve this problem.   Thanks, in advance.
