Zbook 15 G2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After troubleshooting an intermittent hardware problem with my Zbook 15 G2 (which wound up being a heat-pipe/thermal issue), I wound up with an extra 256GB M.2 SSD module that I'd ordered on eBay as I had been suspicious about the original.

I'd like to use the M.2 drive in a USB enclosure, but haven't been able to find one that is compatible.  Seems these drives are an odd in-between product that was better than SATA (has PCIe interface), but isn't NVMe  (AHCI protocol).  What is commonly out there are USB enclosures that either do SSD-SATA or NVMe-PCIe, but NOT PCIe-SATA-AHCI.

The disk module has both the "B" and "M" notches in the connector edge.  The Zbook has only the "M" notch in its connector.

I've tried both disk modules in two USB-C enclosures, one SSD and one combo SSD & NVMe and neither drive worked in either enclosure.

This disk module is variously known as from the sticker on the unit:

HP 759492-001

  SD6PP4M-256G-1006

  SanDisk SSD A110 M.2 2260 256GBa.k.a. HP 803381-001 (newer partsurfer.hp.com equivalent)

So has anyone found an affordable USB enclosure for these?

I'd even settle for a PCIe card if that was priced reasonably.  Given that proper 256G M.2 NVMe cards go for about $40 these days, it isn't worth spending a fortune on this, but I'd still prefer to put it to use rather than only being a cold spare.

Thanks!

@JonH4rm

From following information, it is M.2 SATA SSD

          https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/m-2-sandisk-sd6pp4m-256g-1006-nvme-or-sata.3702542/

There are many enclosures around and normally they are 2280 format but can be used for shorter drives. I'm using the following one (I bough from the following  shop)

         https://cplonline.com.au/startech-sm2ngffmbu33-external-usb-3-0-sata-m-2-ssd-enclosure.html

You can buy from every where

Thanks for the response!

So just to be perfectly clear - are you using the Startech SM2NGFFMBU33 enclosure with this exact drive?  The hp branded Sandisk A110?

I'm asking because I already have two enclosures that CLAIM to support M.2 SATA but apparently not this particular mix that features PCIe. One enclosure is SATA only, the other claims support for both SATA and NVMe.  Neither of them work with the hp flavored Sandisk A110.  The latter is a Sabrent which works fine with an SK Hynix NVMe drive.

I actually considered the Startech one, but for the same price the Sabrent was USB-C, combo SATA/NVMe and has a clamshell design which I think is better for heat dissipation (thermal pad contact) rather than a slider like the Startech.

Thanks again!
