HP USB x900w Flash Drive
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just got a new HP 256GB x900w USB 3.0 Flash Drive. It's my second one actually. I really liked the first one, worked fine until it had a weird issue. So I got a second one, exact same, and as soon as I opened it up and plugged it in, it has not worked. When I try to open the file explorer and the USB drive, it stays open for a little until I try to copy any files to it, and then it immediately closes. Windows gives me an error, saying "Error 0x800701B1: A device which does not exist was specified." The File explorer then crashes, and no matter what I do, I can't get it to work. Please help me this is very frustrating...

Hi@twon82,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you are experiencing issues with the HP USB X900w Flash Drive. I apologize for the Inconvenience.

I have a few recommendations

  • This problem is typically reported to occur with external USB Flash Drive and is typically the result of an incompatible generic driver.
  • Go to Device Manager to force your OS to install a compatible version for your USB Flash Drive.
  • Plug the USB Flash Drive into a different USB port.
  • Perform a rescan of the disks.
  • Reinstall device drivers.
  • Try the same USB Flash Drive on alternate computer/laptop and check.
