HP 250 G8 Notebook PC (1T4J8AV)

The laptop has 2 USB A ports on the right hand side. The port nearest the track pad, bottom port, has an issue.  I think it is COM6. I am using 2 Ugreen serial RS232 to USB adapter cables with Prolific 2303GT chipsets. One converts the data from a marine AIS system, the other from a battery monitor. Both cables are W11 compatible. The drivers have been installed and W11 updates have installed further Prolific updates in the last 3 months.

When plugged in to the bottom problem port, I get a message "USB device not recognised. The last device malfunctioned and Windows doesn't recognise it. " Device Manager shows "Unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".

A WD external hard drive plugged in works fine. An external CD drive with 2 USB A cables only works if the data cable is plugged in the top port. Both USB cables plugged into a cheap USB hub in the top port work fine as COM5 and 6, as they do with a USB C hub in the left hand side USB C port.

Any ideas out there??

If the USB port works with everything else, but has errors with "2 Ugreen serial RS232 to USB adapter cables with Prolific 2303GT chipsets", the logic path of troubleshooting should tell you that is the problem.

Go to the vendor(manufacturer) website and seek firmware updates for the version of Windows you have installed.

Thanks. But I don't think it is as simple as that. Both cables work singly  in one of the COM ports perfectly, and both together in hubs.  And the drivers have been updated. I don't think there is a firmware update for the cables. Prolific has this

"(For PL2303 HXD, SA, RA GC, GS, GT, GL, GE , GD, GR versions)

  - Windows 11  Certified WHQL Driver ( 21H2 versions)

   - Auto-download driver via Windows Update (Windows 1 1)"

And W11 has done that.

I think it could be an HP problem.
