HP Pavilion - 15-cu0058nr

at least one of the USB ports on my laptop is nonfunctional. I have an external hard drive that I have plugged into it all the time and I am able to read the external hard drive when I plug it into other computers, but not when I plug it into my laptop. I had been able to get it to wake up by uninstalling it and reinstalling it and worked once, and it hasn’t worked since. my mouse adapter seems to function in both USB reports, but not my external hard drive.  Can I replace this part or no?

Hi  @KMB-T

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I can certainly understand how important it is to have reliable access to your external hard drive, especially when it has been working previously. I'm glad to hear you've already done some troubleshooting and confirmed that the drive works on other computers.

To help us better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm:

  • Does the external hard drive appear in Disk Management when connected to the laptop?
    • Press Windows + X and select Disk Management.
  • When the drive is connected, do you hear it spin up or see any activity lights?
  • Are both USB ports showing the same behavior with the external hard drive?

In the meantime, kindly try the following steps:

Step 1: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics for USB Ports

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and repeatedly tap F2.
  3. Open Component Tests.
  4. Run any available USB Port Test or comprehensive hardware test.
  5. Let us know the results.

Step 2: Disable USB Power Management

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click each USB Root Hub and select Properties.
  4. Open the Power Management tab.
  5. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  6. Restart the laptop and test the drive again.

Step 3: Reinstall USB Controllers

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click and uninstall all USB Root Hub, Generic USB Hub, and USB Host Controller entries.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers.

Regarding your question about replacing the USB port, on the HP Pavilion 15-cu0058nr, the USB ports are typically attached to the system board or a daughterboard depending on the specific configuration. If a hardware issue is eventually confirmed, replacement may be possible, but we would first want to determine whether this is a hardware-related issue or a driver/software-related issue since your mouse adapter is still being detected.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
