Computer bought with Win10 installed. As of a month ago approximately software updates particcularly Windows10 automatic forced updates are causing the USB Root Hub controller to become unidentified hardware in the device controller. My only way out was to use an old restore point where the USB hub root controller was working. This of course triggers a new forced windows update a few days later.
I tried to fine the appropriate USB Root controller driver - to no avail.
I tried Device Manager - >delete the USB host controller (that is how the USB Root Hub is identified by "search for device changes" - As mentioned the system installs the wrong device driver for a "lowly USB hub controller and not a "Root" controller. No external USB device works with this driver.
I tried the Intel Device Driver Updated - no success in restoration of the USB Root Hub controller driver and setup.
I tried to use the xHCI windows driver for USB3.0 but in that condition the software reports that "this computer does not meet the minimun requirements for installing this software" - The comuter has 2 USB3.0 device ports.
I also tried reinstalling the Intel chipset drives but that faild to redefine the USB Root HUb controller.
Important note - Under the Restore point interface of the OS the USB Root Controller works fine! (verified with a wireless dongle and a keyboard mouse set.
Please help ASAP I have a business trip comming and need the USB ports working for my demonstrations.

I'm not sure if replay by forum or e-mail is needed so here goes both;
So it’s a little complicated, the first time this problem of disappearing USB Root Controller happened was after a few unrelated to each other changes in my computer,
- In Early December I attached a 3.0 USB hub and installed a UGplus device which provides GPIB over USB, which required Restart and lost access to the USB Root Controller when the PC restarted. I then rolled back to a previous restore point and all was fine. I installed a few software packages since to and each time added a new restore point JIC. All reboots were fine until a December Win10 update that shut down my computer overnight and upon restart it did not have any USB devices. Again I rolled back to a previous restore point and after reboot manually updated my computer – All is well. So I installed other software and work with USB 3.0 hub – till Jan 22 when another Win10 overnight update + reboot caused the disappearance of the USB root controller once more. Now I need to roll back 7 restore points to get to a working Root hub controller state.
- I checked the driver configuration in that prior restore point in which the Root Hub Controller still works: USB Root Hub controller (USB 3.0) Microsoft 10/24/2017 10.0.16299.64 So as I understand it is the xHCI driver which is responsible for recognizing the Root Hub Controller. But as mentioned if I try to reinstall it now it fails to install saying "this computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software" – so something in the software configuration, registry or something else seems to prevent interface to the hardware for the driver package.

Solved !!
Called HP support and they suggested to uninstall Windows updates #1709 (there are a few of those and the second one I did uninstall restored the USB Root Controller to its glorious working order.
SHAME ON YOU Microsoft.
Only one problem - any night soon Microsoft will force reinstall of this package. - No way to disable that !!!! MS Idiots.

Thanks for the update to that issue @Dagbay
It would have been helpful to know which update specifically was the culprit.
But there might be a way to prevent the update from reinstalling again.
Here is a copy/paste of the instructions from a Computerworld (Woody L) article using Windows WUSHOWHIDE.cab tool.
Step 1. Go to KB 3073930 and download Microsoft's Wushowhide tool to your desktop.
Step 2. Double-click on Wushowhide.diagcab to run it.
Step 3. This part’s important. Click the link marked Advanced. Uncheck the box marked "Apply repairs automatically." Click Next.
Step 4. Wushowhide will run for a long, long time. When it comes back up for air, click the link to Hide Updates. If you see a checkbox marked "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709," as in the screenshot, check the box next to the item and click Next. (If you don't see "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709," the upgrade isn't being sent to your box yet. “X” out of wushowhide and check again tomorrow.)
Wushowhide is an odd bird. If it successfully hid the upgrade/update/patch, you’ll see a "Troubleshooting has completed" dialog with your 1709 patch marked as a “Problems found.” You did everything right.
Step 5. Click Close. You're done.
Hopefully that will help. Let us know if you have further issues.
Thanks again.

I can now report report which update it was that solved the USB Root Hub controller issue because the problem recurred after a 2/3/18 update KB4048955 the problem of the lost USB root Hub controller returned. So this time I uninstalled only the KB4056892 from 1/29/18 and the problem was resolved.
