HP Notebook - 15-dw0053nl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi everybody,

the issue is the folowing.

One of the 2 USB ports of my laptop HP-15-DW0053NL fails in recognizing external MICE and KEYBOARDS, but works well with other peripherals like pendrives, HD, card readers.

I have already tried to DISINSTALL the USB PORT and to restart the laptop. The USB port seemed to restart working,  but when I have turned off my laptop and I restarted it, the issue has come back again and RE-disinstalling the USB port and restarting the laptop was useless.

Also tried to use the internal troubleshooting but nothing (it finds the issue but it doesn't fix it).

May I ask you your help? Thanks so much in advance.

@MP_XY, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand you're facing an issue where one of the USB ports on your HP Notebook - 15-dw0053nl doesn't recognize mice or keyboards, though it works fine with other peripherals. You've already tried uninstalling the USB drivers and running the Windows troubleshooter, but the issue persists after reboot. Let's try a few more targeted steps to resolve this:

Power Reset the Laptop

Sometimes residual power can cause USB ports to malfunction.

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Unplug the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and turn on the laptop.
  • Test the USB port with a mouse or keyboard.

Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Outdated firmware or chipset drivers can cause USB recognition issues.

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page for your model.
  • Enter your product
  • Download and install the latest:
    • BIOS update
    • Intel Chipset Driver
    • Intel USB 3.0/3.1 eXtensible Host Controller driver (if available)

Disable USB Selective Suspend

This Windows power-saving feature can sometimes disable USB ports.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings (for your active plan).
  • Click Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
  • Set both On battery and Plugged in to Disabled.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Check Device Manager for Errors

  • Press Windows + X > Device Manager.
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Look for any entries with a yellow triangle or labeled Unknown Device.
  • Right-click and choose Uninstall device, then restart your laptop.

Test in Safe Mode

Boot into Safe Mode to check if third-party software is interfering.

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  • Go to the Boot tab, check Safe boot, and click OK.
  • Restart your PC and test the USB port.
  • To exit Safe Mode, repeat the steps and uncheck Safe boot.

Try HP Hardware Diagnostics

Run a USB port test using HP’s built-in diagnostics tool:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then F2.
  • Choose Component Tests > USB Test and follow the prompts.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it could be a hardware-level fault with the USB controller. In that case, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: Ricerca centro assistenza HP® - Italia | Supporto HP®
