I have a HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh3, 1 year old. I have a problem with my USB ports. If I connect my phone, it only charges it. If I connect a mouse, it works. If I connect my printer (HP), it doesn’t recognize it. What can the issue be? I already reinstalled all the drivers.

Hi @citta_di_berna,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion 15-eh3 USB ports aren’t recognizing certain devices like your printer, while your phone only charges and the mouse works. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check USB Port Type and Function
– Your laptop has both USB-A (data + power) and USB-C (sometimes power-only or limited data).
– Ensure the printer is connected to a USB port that supports data transfer, not just charging.

Test With a Different USB Cable
– Printer USB cables fail more commonly than expected.
– Try another cable, ideally a known working USB-A to USB-B printer cable.

Run Windows USB Troubleshooter
– Go to Settings > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > “Hardware and Devices.”
– This resets stuck USB controllers and can restore device detection.

Reset USB Controllers
– Open Device Manager > expand “Universal Serial Bus controllers.”
– Right-click each “USB Root Hub” and “Generic USB Hub,” select “Uninstall,” then restart the laptop.
– Windows will reinstall fresh USB drivers on reboot.

Verify Printer Detection in Device Manager
– Connect the printer and check if anything appears under “Other devices” or “Unknown device.”
– If it appears with a warning symbol, right-click and update driver.

Disable USB Selective Suspend
– Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
– Under USB settings, disable “USB selective suspend” so ports don’t turn off automatically.

Check if Phone is Set to Charging Only
– Some phones default to “Charge only” mode.
– Unlock your phone and change the USB mode to File Transfer to confirm the port supports data.

I hope this helps.
