Hi,
I recently purchased the HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen (Black), product number 3J122AA#UUF.
The pen is fully charged, but I’m unable to pair it with my Windows 11 PC.
I followed the instructions provided in the HP support video Set Up and Use the HP Tilt Pen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XofyzWyW9yM) specifically the Bluetooth pairing steps:
- Press the top button on the pen for three seconds until the light turns solid blue, indicating it’s ready to pair [00:55].
- On the laptop, go to Settings > Devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth [01:08].
- Select "HP Tilt Pen" and click "Done" to complete the pairing [01:15].
However, I’ve tried this several times and the pen's light never turns on when I press and hold the top button. It appears unresponsive at this stage.
Could you please assist?
Kind regards,
Leigh

Hi @Leigh_Wardle,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for explaining so clearly. Since your HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen (3J122AA#UUF) is fully charged but showing no light when the top button is pressed, the issue is happening before Windows or Bluetooth even come into play. Let’s check a few key things:
1. Confirm Charging & Power
- Make sure you use a USB-C cable that supports data/power (some “charge-only” cables don’t work well).
- When plugged in, the pen’s LED should briefly glow amber (charging) or white (fully charged). If there’s no light at all during charging, the pen may not be receiving power.
2. Hard Reset the Pen
- Press and hold the Eraser/Top Button + Tip of the Pen together for about 10 seconds.
- Release, then try the pairing sequence again (press and hold the top button for ~3 seconds).
3. Check Compatibility
- The HP MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen works only with Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP)–enabled touchscreens. If your PC’s touchscreen isn’t MPP-compatible, it won’t recognize or pair.
- You can confirm by checking your device’s specs on HP’s site or in Windows Ink Workspace (if “Pen & Windows Ink” is missing, the screen may not support it).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Vikram,
Thanks for your advice.
I just had a look at the information sheet that came with the pen.
Pairing is not mentioned in the setup instructions.
It turns out I can write with the pen and the 2 buttons work.
So it appears that I do not need to manually pair with bluetooth.

Hi @Leigh_Wardle,
Exactly right, you figured it out! The HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen uses the Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP), so in most cases it doesn’t require Bluetooth pairing to write or for the side buttons to function.
Bluetooth is only used if you want to enable the top button shortcut features (like launching apps or using custom Windows Ink functions). That’s why the instructions seemed confusing. The core pen functions (writing, tilt, pressure, side buttons) work straight away without pairing.
So, if writing and side buttons are working for you, you’re all set! ✍️✨
If you need any more help, please do keep us posted

Hello, I am dealing with the exact same pen and problem, but my pen used to work and now it does not. My laptop screen works with touch screen, and used to with pen, but now it doesn't recognise when I use my pen. What can I do?
