My laptop has always been slow even from the get go. My other laptops with half the spec outperform the laptop. I finally have some time to tinker with it and when performing the long drive self test, it gets stuck at 10%. I updated the BIOS and it is more of the same.
Any thoughts on how to get this thing to function?

Greetings!
Welcome to the HP Support Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand, there's an issue with the system performance.
Appreciate you trying the steps. Don't worry, I'm here to help!
Let's try these steps -
Step 1 Hard Reset -
1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.
3) Remove the Battery.
Note - This step might not be applicable if you have a desktop or a computer that has a built-in battery.
4) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.
5) Plug-in the Adapter and put the Battery back into the computer.
6) Try to turn on the computer.
Step 2 BIOS Defaults -
1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F10 once for BIOS.
4) Press F9 for BIOS defaults.
5) Press F10 to save and exit.
Step 3 Hard Drive Test -
1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F2 once.
4) Go to Component test.
5) From the list, run the Hard Drive (extensive) test.
You may also refer to this video link to test the Hard Drive from the Windows screen.

Hope this helps!
Let me know how that goes.

This (above) doesn't answer the question - the OP had already done all that and the sticking point is that the long disk test doesn't complete and gets stuck at 10%. I have the same issue on my Pavillion. Can you please answerr the question.

Is it hard to figure out? If the test will not run there is a hardware issue with the hard drive and it needs replacement. If you are under warranty make a warranty claim. If not we can point you to a Manual and likely a video and give some tips on the best place to get a new hard drive. Sometimes the dedicated HP agents are bogged down with work rules requiring them to post stuff like the above but those of us who don't work for HP can answer directly even if the answer is not what you would like to hear. Nobody wants to have to get a new hard drive.

You are right - that's not what I wanted to hear. The machine is only just out of warranty. It's soooo slow (and has been for ages). And it crashes (ie. shuts itself down) for "overheating" whenever there's any interactive video (Skype, Hangouts, Zoom, AdobeConnect, etc) and sometimes even when just watching youtibe. I teach live lectures online so this is a nightmare! I've updated the BIOS, blow fans at it all the time, have had it professionally cleaned (it wasn't dirty anyway), and so on. Could you send me the vidoes? Or should I just pay HP to come sort it out.
(My other laptop - an HP spectre - has also just crashed yesterday - that one won't even start)

Videos relate to a specific model and all you have told me is you have a "Pavilion"...so please provide specific model or product number. And frankly I cannot believe a professional diassembled it to clean the fans and never considered checking the hard drive. If you do not have a solid state drive that is your best investment at this point.
