Undocumented BIOS pushed?

What is the latest BIOS for this laptop?

Your support website says F.68 [11/2024] but something pushed F.71 to this laptop today [7/23/2026] !

I have not used this laptop for over a year.

That is indeed interesting.

You are correct: HP's support page for your HP Laptop PC 15t-dw300 CTO (1A3Y3AV) does currently lists F.68 (November 2024) as the latest BIOS available for manual download, yet your notebook reports receiving F.71 today.

Please verify the installed BIOS version by pressing Windows + R, typing msinfo32, and looking at BIOS Version/Date, or by running the following PowerShell command:

Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS | Select-Object SMBIOSBIOSVersion, ReleaseDate

If it shows F.71, there's generally no cause for concern. HP sometimes distributes newer BIOS revisions through Windows Update as UEFI firmware updates before (or without) updating the BIOS listed on the HP Support website.

Please let me know what BIOS Version/Date is reported, and whether the update was installed through Windows Update, HP Support Assistant, or another method.

I did not apply any BIOS update via the BIOS. I did Windows Updates, and that may have triggered the UEFI update:

That clears up an important part of the mystery.

Your msinfo32 information confirms that F.71 is actually installed:

So this isn't a reporting error or Windows incorrectly identifying the BIOS.

The particularly interesting part is that HP's driver page for this product currently lists F.68 from November 2024 as the latest downloadable BIOS, while your machine has F.71 dated November 21, 2025.

And since you didn't manually flash the BIOS, it is quite plausible that the firmware was delivered through Windows Update as a UEFI firmware update. Windows Update can deliver OEM firmware through Microsoft's Windows Update infrastructure, and the update can be installed during a subsequent reboot rather than through the traditional HP BIOS-download process.

In other words, I don't think you have an "undocumented BIOS" in the sense of an unofficial or suspicious BIOS.

F.71 appears to be a genuine HP/Insyde BIOS revision; the oddity is that HP is apparently distributing it through a channel that isn't reflected on the public driver page.

There is also an interesting clue in the dates:

F.71 — 11/21/2025

versus

your installation — 7/23/2026

So, F.71 isn't a BIOS that was created in July 2026. It appears to have existed since November 2025 and only reached your particular machine much later.

That raises a couple of questions I would be interested in knowing what the answer is:

1. Was F.71 intentionally released only through Windows Update rather than HP's public driver page?
2. Was it released to only certain configurations of the 15-dw3xxx?
3. What changed between F.68 and F.71?
4. Why is F.71 still absent from HP's public driver page nearly eight months after its stated BIOS date?

I would not roll back to F.68 simply because F.71 isn't shown on the website. Unless you're experiencing a problem that began immediately after the update, I'd leave the newer BIOS installed.

One more thing that would be useful: if you go to Settings → Windows Update → Update history, look under Driver Updates and see whether there is an entry for an HP firmware, HP BIOS, or similar update around July 23, 2026.

If you find that entry, please post its exact name/version. That may tell us exactly which Windows Update package delivered F.71.

So, at this point I'd characterize it as:

Not an undocumented or suspicious BIOS; rather, a legitimate HP BIOS revision that appears to have been distributed through Windows Update but isn't currently exposed on HP's public download page.

To be honest, I'd be curious to know why HP has F.71 sitting in the Windows Update pipeline whilst its own support page still tells customers that F.68 is the latest BIOS.
