Zbook 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I’ve recently purchased a refurbished HP Zbook 15.  I’m happy with the unit, but I’d like to add memory and perhaps a 128 gb m2 ssd 2280 nvme drive.  Down the road it would be nice to be able to add the optional FP reader, and perhaps the optional SD card reader.

My dilemma is that I don’t know exactly WHAT I have regarding the box.  There is no label on the bottom so I don’t k now an exact model number.  I can get data from HP, but they need the serial number which I don’t appear to have.  Belarc shows a serial number, but the HP site tells me it’s invalid.  I’ve appended part of the Belarc report in case this gives anyone any ideas as to how I should proceed.

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

Zbook 15 comes in 4 generations and you can tell which it is by just the processor. Sending this on a Zbook 15 G3 and it has a 6th Gen i7 and some have Xeons...but if you just look at this PC/properties and identify the processor we can find you the correct service manual. In your case is it a 4th gen i7 which means the unit is a Zbook 15 G2.

The rear cover on yours is even easier to open:

Manual

DDR3L-1600 memory up to 4 x 8 = 32 gigs.

@JLOB

Belarc is pretty good about squeezing information out of the system.

Perhaps the system board was changed out ... ?

Note that each of these methods are dependent on the BIOS knowing the serial number.

A couple of ideas:

Open a command prompt window with Admin privileges:

Windows key + X + A

type command:

wmic bios get serialnumber

The following might be useful in context..

Windows key + X + A

run commands as instructed:

cd c:\windows\system32

lodctr /R

(NOTE:  If output errors >> run command sequence again OR ignore and continue)

cd c:\windows\sysWOW64

lodctr /R

Run command to create Report:

perfmon /report

NOTE:

Supposedly the report is generated after 60 (sixty) seconds -- assuming this is going to happen, the report / results will open the report in about that long.  If the "generating" bit just goes on and on and on... it is not going to finish.  Sometimes, waiting a bit and then trying the command line sequence(s) again fixes whatever was stuck and the report will generate as expected.

Edits - Corrected instructions - added "open hardware configuration category"

Report Opens > Open Category Hardware Configuration >

Open category BIOS > Click open element under Query >

Click open element(s) under Returned Objects >

Examine items listed in Property; look for "Serial Number"

Perfmon_Serial_Number_1.JPG

To save the contents of your lovely report:

File > Save As > select a folder and a name for the file

Thanks for the input.  I tried evrythig you suggested.   wmic bios produces CND4365TLH as the serial number.

Report Opens > Open category BIOS > Click open element under Query >

Click open element unter Returned Objects >

Examine list; look for "Serial Number"

No mention of seril number in the list.

I was going to append the report .html but thought that might be a bit presumptious.  I guess I'm dead in the water.   I don't particularly want to disassemble the box to determine what memory modules I need.  I'd also like to add that SSD, FP reader and SD Card RDR, but can't do that until and unless I can identify the box to HP.  I DO appreciate your help though.

Thanks again.

@JLOB

You are welcome.

I did edit the perfmon report "how to" instructions to correct the missing "hardware configuration" category.

Regardless, the edits / effort is likely wasted - if the BIOS is convinced the serial number is "xxx", then that information will be fed back (to you) anytime you use a method dependent on the BIOS.

If the original Operating System were still installed, the original data / information would like be saved in one of a few areas on the computer.  For example:  C:\SYSTEM.SAV (possibly on the top level of that folder of perhaps in the LOGS subfolder.

Log files (.LOG) and configuration file (.ini) can be opened / read with Notepad.

For the sake of a "clean" system, do not set the "Always open with this app" key.

@Huffer is much more familiar system and might be able to help find the information you seek.

Once again I'm in your debt.  I knew how to open the bottom cover, and you're correct.  It's a piece of cake.  The manual should tell  me what I need to know.

Thanks again.
