It wouldn't let me ask this to Tech Support so thought someone here may know the answer.
I bought the Max Memory for this laptop CA0xxx.
I was thinking of maybe while it's open to upgrade the CPU while i'm at it.
right now I have a Ryzen 3 2200u, could the motherboard handle a Ryzen 5 lets say? What am i limited to by
having this mainboard?

Hi:
Your notebook's processor is an integral part of the motherboard and cannot be upgraded unless you replace the motherboard with one listed in chapter 3 of your notebook's service manual that may come with a better processor.
Maintenance and Service Guide HP 17 Laptop PC
The associated costs for doing such an upgrade would far outweigh the benefits.

[EDIT:] @Paul_Tikkanen, at least some HP Laptop 17-Ca0xxx's have AMD Ryzen 5 2500U (2.00 GHz up to 3.60 GHz max boost, 4 cores and 8 threads) installed on an HP 84D2 motherboard.
For an actual real-life User example, see: HP Laptop 17-ca0xxx Performance Results - UserBenchmark.
Hope this helps!

You would have to show me where the processor removal and replacement procedure is in the service manual I posted, because I don't know of any AMD or Intel notebook made in the last 6 -7 years that comes with a removable processor.

If the AMD processor is actually soldered onto the motherboard, removal & replacement would be very challenging indeed.
However, I doubt that HP Laptop 17-ca0xxx Users would have swapped non-removable processors. Out of 932 HP Laptop 17-ca0xxx UserBenchMark [dot] com User entries, a sizeable portion of them -16.3% (152 total, roughly one out of six) sport AMD Ryzen 5 2500U processors.
Therefore, either you can swap processors, or there are HP 84D2 motherboards versions out there equipped with different CPUs.

Research information that preferably should be easily (kept) accessible through HP is often not available.
Time and time again, as here trying to find info on HP 84D2, I run into this unhelpful message:

Hi, @NonSequitur777
All they are listing in the site you posted is the compatible processors that were offered in the model series.
You can see those all listed in chapter 3 of the service manual, where they are included with each motherboard.
When you look at the parts list, only motherboards with processors are listed, not individual processors.
Take a look at a chapter 3 of a service manual for a notebook that has removable AMD processors...
You will find a separate parts list for processors, and a separate list of motherboard parts the processors install on.

My friend, the link you provided in your previous message is for the HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC, not the HP Laptop 17-Ca0xxx.
The service link I assume you had in mind is this: Maintenance and Service Guide HP 17 Laptop PC.
The HP Laptop 17-Ca0xxx motherboard p/n fitted with an AMD Ryzen 5-2500U processor is: L22717-601.
Apparently, there's an even faster motherboard option: AMD Ryzen 5-3500U processor (p/n: L46461-601).
All these parts are available via Ebay, for example, though they are fairly pricey. However, to answer the original question "can I upgrade my HP Laptop 17-Ca0xxx with a faster processor", the answer is unequivocally: YES you can. -But I grant you this: it would take changing out the motherboard to do that, which causes other issues such as you may (?) have to buy a new Windows license, etc.
Anyway, that's all I have to say about this query.
Kind Regards,

...which is what I wrote in my original post. You have to change the motherboard in order to upgrade the processor.
No ifs, ands or buts.
You missed the purpose of my last post. I deliberately posted an old manual for a g7 notebook to point out that when a notebook came with removable processors, the processors and motherboards are listed as separate parts.
Also, you don't need to buy a new Windows license if you buy a motherboard that comes with Windows product key in the BIOS.
The motherboard part numbers are different for the motherboards that come with Windows and those that don't.
