My laptop came with one 4gb ram stick and when I put both 8gb ram sticks in I got black screen. Doesn’t matter which bank I use as long as only one stick is inserted it will boot but with both banks full all I get is high speed fan and black screen. I’m lost as it says it can hold 32gb ddr4 ram.

The devil is in the details here. Please tell us the maker and stock numbers on the memory you removed and then the sticks you put in. Yours is a Ryzen processor model and yes should handle 2 x 16 of DDR4-2400 but if you try to install "high performance" or "gaming" memory it may not POST.

important thing is the density and the latency. How many rows of black blocks on the side of the module and the CL = rating. OEM DDR4-2400 should be CL = 17. The Samsung is definitely single rank and CL = 17.

Having trouble finding the specs on that PNY.

Cl-17 is latency on pny. New ram as well.

No logical reason for it not to work. Try mixing one of the 8s with the original 4. If it boots like that and shows 12 gb it is some mysterious compatibility issue with the PNY memory running by itself.
