HP EliteBook 2560p Notebook PC

Hi there,

I want to upgrade my CPU from i7-2620M to i7-2860QM. Is there anyone who did the same upgrade? I'm looking just for i7-2860QM because other CPU will not change productivity too much. I believe it should work if not blocked by HP. OS is also not a problem, if it will work in Linux is also acceptable. Thank you in advance for answers!

P.S. It's a good machine and after 12 years still work just fine, so I want to extend its life.

Hi:

I wouldn't risk it.

The service manual indicates that only dual core sandy bridge processors are supported.

This benchmarking website shows one person installed an i7-2720QM in theirs.

UserBenchmark: HP EliteBook 2560p Compatible Components

There is a report of another person installing an i7-2720QM in theirs but look at the graphics adapter (Nvidia GTX660)...that cannot be correct.

At least i7-2860QM is listed as a compatible product for Mobile Intel® QM67 Express Chipset. It's too expensive to make different solutions for each CPU model. From other side HP has no reason to say: "yes it will work". Let's wait for a while and see if anyone has sucessful expirience in such upgrade. I'm not on hurry and I already have new model, but still I don't want to throw out well working workstation with 500Gb SSD and 16 Gb RAM.

@Paul_Tikkanen,

An HP EliteBook 2560p does support quad core, 45-watt TDP processors, but granted, it is a hit-and-miss proposition as this link -usually quite accurately in my experience, shows:

Link: CPU-Upgrade: Intel Core i7-2620M (PGA) CPU.

Btw, the HP EliteBook 2560p benchmark showing a Nvidia GTX 660 graphics card is legit.  Not only is this laptop fitted with the correct motherboard (Hewlett-Packard 162B), but the means to connect a laptop (or DM, USDT, AIO, etc.) to an eGPU are out there, like I did here: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM 65W (TAA) Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Kind Regards,
